SKILL FOCUS
is

Good speakers and writers use language effectively to be able to persuade an audience for
Th

specific purpose. This ability is called rhetoric. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, one of the biggest
proponents of the concept of rhetoric. He suggested the three modes of persuasion: ethos, logos,
and pathos, also known as the rhetorical appeals. What follows is Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle
sh

which shows how the three elements must work together to come up with an effective persuasive
speech or piece of writing.

The table that follows shows some examples for each mode of persuasion.

Rhetorical Appeals Examples

Ethos can be shown in your

speech or writing by "My three decades of experience in public service, my
sounding fair and tireless commitment to the people of this community, and my
demonstrating your expertise willingness to reach across the aisle and cooperate with the

"If my years as a Marine taught me anything, it's that
caution is the best policy in this sort of situation."

1. The following sentences are taken from “Computers Cannot Teach Children Basic
Skills.” Identify which mode persuasion is used in each: ethos, logos, or pathos.
is

a. Over the last decade an estimated $2 billion has been spent on more than 2 million
computers for America’s classrooms. Logos
Th

b. An intercity principal bragged to a teacher friend of mine recently that his school “has
a computer in every classroom . . . despite being in a bad neighborhood!”
sh

Pathos

c. The idea of multimedia is to combine text, sound, and pictures in a single package that
you browse on-screen. You don’t just read Shakespeare; you watch actors performing,
listen to songs, view Elizabethan buildings. Logos

d. What’s wrong with that? By offering children candy-coated books, multimedia is
guaranteed to sour them on unsweetened reading. It makes the printed page look even
more boring than it used to look. Sure, books will be available in the classroom, too —
but they’ll have all the appeal of a dusty piano to a teen who has a Walkman handy.
Pathos

e. Disembodied paragraphs are linked by theme; after reading one about the First World
War, for example, you might be able to choose another about the technology of
battleships, or the life of Woodrow Wilson, or hemlines in the’$0s. Logos

f. Teaching children to understand the orderly unfolding of a plot or a logical argument is

a crucial part of education. Authors don’t merely agglomerate paragraphs; they work
hard to make the narrative read a certain way, prove a particular point. _Ethos

g. In Kentucky, as the Wall Street Journal reported, students in grades K–3 are mixed
together regardless of age bn a relaxed environment. It works great, the Journal says.

j. Second, computers should be used only during recess or relaxation periods. Treat them
as fillips, not as surrogate teachers. When I was in school in the ’60s, we all loved
educational films. When we saw a movie in class, everybody won: teachers didn’t

have to teach, and pupils didn’t have to learn. Ethos____________

2. Watch the documentary film, “Give Up Tomorrow” Choose five arguments and state your
position, make sure to provide pieces of evidence.

A. The case of Chiong sisters is considered the worst crime at that time in Cebu city. The
police were pressure to transpire the case immediately, so they offered a reward for
those who can tell an information about the Chiong sisters’ murder. For me, I think this
sh

might be the worst crime in Cebu city at that time. For the reason of that, in the
documentary film, they have been providing an article in the newspaper of Philstar that
tells who ever can tells the information about the case can get a reward. Therefore, we
can infer that it is a big case and worst crime that urgently to be solved.

B. In July 16, 1997, the Chiong sister crime was happened at Cebu city. However, Paco
was schooling at that time, his school have recorded attendance; his name was recorded
in the attendance. His school is at Quezon city, but the crime scene happened in Cebu
city. It is impossible to get there in just an hour. Paco is not the killer; he can provide a
strong evidence that he was not go at Cebu city.

C. Chiong family was trying to hide something that they don’t want to share at the media.
According to Leo Lastimosa in the film, the father of Chiong sisters was trusted
lieutenant of one of a major drug lords in the Philippines identified by the congress. Mr.
Chiong handled the service trucking business which was investigated for drug
trafficking. I am strongly agreeing that Mr. Chiong was trying hide something and it is
possible to have another party of suspect that abducted the sisters. Apparently, the police
didn’t investigate another party.

D. Mrs. Chiong has a sister namely, Cheryl Jimenea who was the appointment secretary of

President “Erap” Estrada; the Chiong family can be possibly have a strong connection

to the president. In which the president has an omnipotent to control the case; and

according to Lastimosa, the investigation of the case is very questionable.

E. After Davidson Rusia have testified to the judge, in the hidden detention center, he was

republic of the Philippines, Cebu city. We can infer that, the case is handling and

controlling by the Chiong family. This justice is very unfair for Paco and the rest of the
suspected persons, they have not given a chance to defend their rights as a Filipino
people.
