Compilation of Quran

Quran.

Preservation of Quran during the Lifetime of the Prophet (s.a.w):

Allah tells us in the Holy Qur’an that He sent to an illiterate nation a prophet from
amongst them who could not read nor write. The Majority of the Arabs at the time
of the prophet (s.a.w) could not read nor write, thus in order to preserve any
knowledge they usually relied on their memories. So the Prophet (s.a.w) himself and
his companions memorized the verses that were revealed from time to time. There
are many incidents which prove that the Prophet (s.a.w) was very eager to teach
Quran to his companions and that the companions were very eager to learn it and
memorize it.

The companions shared the Prophet's (s.a.w) concern for the preservation of the
Quran. They would recite and memorize as much of the Quran as possible and many
of them had memorized most, if not all of the Quran.
Despite the fact that the Arabs were illiterate in general, there were a few people
among them who could read and write. There are narrations which prove that as
Quran was being revealed it was also being written down.

The companions also had their own personal copies of the Quran. These were not
complete copies of the Quran, nor was the arrangement of the soorahs in them the
same as the later arrangement.

Prophet (s.a.w)

It was in Azerbaijan when one of the companions Hudhayfah ibn al Yaman (r.a) witnessed
Muslims arguing over the recitation of Quran. The Muslims from Syria (who were in
Azerbaijan at that time) were reciting the Quran differently than the Muslims from Iraq.
They began arguing with each other, each regarding his recitation superior to his brother’s.
These Muslims were not companions and therefore were not trained in the proper manner
and etiquette of the recitation of the Quran. The differences arose because of the different
ahruf of Quran and also because many non-Arabs had entered into Islam. Hudhayfah (r.a)
advised them to leave the argumentation, but realized that some action must be taken to
prevent this occurrence on a larger scale. He therefore left Azerbaijan for Madinah, to report
to the caliph Uthman (r.a).
