1 Introduction
Product Description
MA-seriesAgitators are heavy-dutymechanicalmixers for viscousfluids. Severalmodelsare available
to meet a variety of mixing applications. The nomenclatureused by Brandt for mesemodels is as
follows:

Mud Agitator -XX (designates

unit horsepower)

An exampleof this would be anMA -15;a 15 horsepowerMud Agitator

The MA-series Agitators are very compact. Their low profile reducesheadroom requirementsand
providesmore layout spaceon top of the tanks. The 1:1height-to-widthratio resultsin a lower center
of gravity providing stability and safetyshould the impeller encountera sudden shock Ion This
coupled with the action of the wonn gearbeing more resiStantto shock and vibration givesa more
reliableunit than thoseusing helicaland bevelgears. The sliding action of the wonn and gearinsures
quiet smooth,vibration-freeoperation.

Each MA-series agitatorusesa shaft-mountedimpellerto maintaina homogeneousmixture of liquids

and solids within a tank. Impellers are availablewith cantedblades(axial flow) or flat blades(radial
flow), and installedin singleor multiple configurationsto provide the desiredresults. The impellershaft
is suspendedfrom, and attachedto the output shaft of the low profile skid mounted gearbox. The
gearboxusesa wonn-wonn geardrive systemto reducethe rotational speed of the explosion-proof
motor to drive the impeller(s).

MA-series Agitators are available in models ranging from 3 to 30 horsepower. hnpellers range from 20
incl1es(508 mm) diameter to 52 incl1es(1321 mm) diameter. Flat blade impellers are recommended for
tanks less than five feet (1.5 m) in depth. Canted blades are used in tanks deeper than five feet (1.5 m).
A combination of both types is often mounted on a single shaft in tanks greater than 15 feet (4.5 m).

dependableperformance with proper maintenanceand care. This manual contains detailed
information on the proper installation, operation, maintenance, and repali' for the Brandt MA
SeriesAgitators.

WARNINGS & CAUTIONS

The presenceof a Brandt representativeat the site does not relieve the owner/operator of
responsibility to follow published installation, operation, and maintenanceinstructions.

3 Unit Description
General Description
MA-seriesAgitators are heavy-dutymechanicalmixers for viscousfluids and are availablein models
ranging from 3 to 30 horsepower. Each MA-series Agitator consistsof a shaft-mountedimpeller,
motor, gearbox, andmounting base. Electricalcontrols, specialcoatings, sealedbases, and other options
areavailable.

Motor

The motors used on Brandt mud agitators are explosion proof, T-frame, three-phase electric motors
direcrJycoupled to the gearbox using a flexible coupling with a solid steel guard Motors are available for
most voltage/frequent}' requirements. Other electrical code styles and temperature ratings are also
available.

NominalRatings: 230V/460V 60Hz - 1800rpm

190V/380V 50Hz - 1500rpm
Gearbox
The gearboxis a single reduction wonn-wonn geardrive, reducingthe motor speed (1800 rpm @
60 Hz / 1500 rpm @ 50 Hz) to the agitator speed(60 rpm / 50 rpm respectively)in a single30:1
reduction. The gearboxcontains an output shaft, two seals, and four to six bearingsin addition to
the wonn-wonn gear. The bearings are generously spaced to minimize shaft vibration and
deflection, and seals are readily obtainable standard sizes. Unlike many competing agitators,
Brandt's gearboxrequires no manual lubrication of the bottom output bearing.

Mounting base
The motor and gearboxare assembledon a common basewith heavygradefasteners. The baseis sand
blastedt~ white metal, primed with zinc, and fmish coatedwith urethane. Specialcoatingsare available
asan opnon.

Impeller
Impellersmay be cantedblade (axialflow) or flat blade (radialflow), and installedin either single or
multipleconfigurationsto provide the desiredresults. Impellersrangefrom 20" (508 mm) diameterto
52"(1321mm)diameter.

For the most efficient mixing action, canted blade impellers are recommended for all tanks deeper
than five feet (1.5 m). On canted blade impellers, the blades are angled downward at 30 degrees to
promote axial aswell as radial flow. The bladesmove liquid downward to the bottom of the tank, along
the tank bottom toward the tank walls, and then up the tank waIl. All fluid in the tank is mixed
continuously, and the same consistency is maintained in all pans of the tank. Field experience has
confinned that this design provides the most homogeneous mixture in the widest range of installations.
It also eliminates fluid control problems causedby inconsistent miXtures. Canted blade impellers should
be placed on the shaft so that the distance betWeenthe bottom of the tank and the lower edge of the
bladesis equal to .75 times the diameter of the impeller.

Flat blade impellers are recommendedfor tankslessthan five feet (1.5 m) in depth. When properly
mounted, these impellers will produce adequateagitation in these tanks, but may require baffles to
induceboth axialand radialflow, andn1inimizesolidssettling.Flat-bladeimpellersshouldbe placedsix
inChesabovethe bottom of the tank or tWoinChesabovethe bottom shaft stabilizerif oneis used

When an agitatoris used in an extremelydeeptank, over 15 feet (4.5 m) deep, multiple impellerscan be

mounted on one shaft. Usuallythe upper impeller(s)will be cantedblade, and the bottom impeller will
be a flat blade. ContactBrandt engineeringfor properimpeller smng and stabilizerrequirements.

Impeller Shaft
Brandt MA-series agitatorimpeller shafts are manufacturedof solid, mild steel. The impeller shaft is
coupledto the gearboxwith a rigid coupling. All shaftsarekeyedto adjustthe height of the impeller.

Shaft length is determined by tank depth. When ordering impeller shafts, always specify the
actual tank depth. Tank depth is defined as the distance from the bottom surface of the tank to
the top of the agitator support beams.

4 Installation
Proper mounting location: Be sure the mounting location is level, free from obstructions, and will
provide a stableplatform for the unit during normaloperations.

Mounting fasteners: Attach the unit to its mounting surface with heavy-duty threaded fasteners, one at
each comer of the base. As an option, the basemay be welded directly to the mounting surface.

Proper electrical service: Cheffi all electrical components for proper voltage, frequency, duty rating,
and adherenceto applicable electrical codes.

Oil fill breather cap: This cap is sealedwiili tape for shipping.

Caution: Be sure to remove this tape to prevent pressure build-up inside the gear reducer and
resultant seal damage.
Impeller rotation: The impeller should rotate clockwise when viewed from above.

To changethe direction of impellerrotation, simply switchany two lead wires at the startercontrols or
atthe motor.

Bearing Lubrication
Greasethe gearbox top bearing every 100 operating hours with recommended bearing grease. About a
3/8" (9mm) ball of greaseis sufficient. Grease motor every three months. DO NOT OYER-GREASE.
The greases shown here are typical. Any other make of oil meeting the standards of the National
Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) is acceptable.

EP oils are not recommended. If EP oil must be used, make sure it is not corrosive to bronze gear.

For ambient temperatures of -400 to 40°F «-40° to 4°C), use Mobil sHC634, Royal Purple Synergy
