Year 2 - Foundational
Islamic Sciences

The Qalam Seminary's Year 2 program provides
students with a strong foundation and
comprehensive understanding of the major
Islamic Sciences. Students develop the ability to
read and benefit from the work of scholars in
these subjects. The curriculum focuses on
classical academics combined with modern-day
applicability and personal development. The Year
2 program is a strategic exit point in the five-year
Seminary program that equips the community
leader and activist with the tools and knowledge
required to serve in a meaningful capacity.
Students may test out of Year 1 directly into Year 2
during the application process.
 What Will Students
Learn?
Ulūm al-Qur’an (Introduction to the Sciences of
the Qur’an)
• Course Description: Students will study the
revelation, authenticity, preservation, and
miraculous nature of the Qurʾān.
• Text: Al-Tibyān fī ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān
• Instructor: Ustadha Fatima Lette
Usūl al-Ḥadīth (Introduction to the Sciences of
Hadith)
• Course Description: Students will study the
primary discourses surrounding Hadith:
history, authority, preservation, and
criticisms. They will complete a detailed
study of Hadith terminology. Additionally,
students will read through and memorize the
40 Ḥadīth of Imām al-Nawawī, an essential
and well-known Hadith collection.
Afterwards, students will study Mukhtaṣar
Riyāḍ al-Sālihīn which will introduce them to
the Hadith of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬.

and Mukhtaṣar Riyāḍ al-Sālihīn
• Instructor: Ustadh Sohaib Sheikh
ʿAqīdah (Doctrines of Faith)
• Course Description: Students will complete a
detailed study of the core tenets of Ahl al-
Tafsīr (Scholarly Analysis of the Qurʾān)
• Course Description: Students will read
through a traditional commentary of the
majority of the Qurʾān.
• Text: Tafsīr al-Jalālayn

Sīrah
• Course Description: Students will read
through the biography of Prophet
Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬and learn how to practically
apply lessons from his life and teachings.
• Text: Al-Mawāhib al-Laduniyyah
• Instructor: Shaykh Mikaeel Smith
Uṣūl al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Law)
• Course Description: Students will explore the
methodology used by jurists to analyze and
deduce legal rulings, understand the
differences that emerge between the
primary schools of thought, and illustrate the
applications of these methodologies.
• Text: Al-Wajīz fī Uṣūl al-Fiqh
• Instructor: Shaykh AbdulNasir Jangda
Fiqh (Islamic Law)
 Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, supplemented by
research on the Names and Attributes of
Allah. Additionally, students will understand
their creed and where the line is drawn
between correct and incorrect belief.
• Course Description: Students will complete a
study of Fiqh al-ʿIbādāt and Fiqh al-Buyūʿ
(Legal Rulings Related to Purification,
Worship, and Business Transactions) using a
foundational Ḥanafī text.

Tazkiyyah (Spiritual Development)

• Course Description: Students will spend time reading and reflecting on texts by Imām al-Ghazālī,
Imām al-Zarnūjī, and others. These serve to help students grow as ṭulāb al-ʿilm (students of
knowledge), purify their hearts, and build a stronger relationship with Allah ‫ﷻ‬.

What Will Graduates

Accomplish?

Graduates will be prepared to:

• Pursue upper level advanced Islamic studies.

• Serve their communities as educators, youth

directors, or assistant Imams.

• Teach classes and workshops on the

Foundational Islamic Sciences in their local communities.

• Deliver effective Khutbahs.

• Develop modern and effective curricula for Sunday Schools.

 • Provide Islamic education at Islamic schools.

Part-Time Y2

Is there a part-time option available?

We understand that not every interested and

motivated student may be able to commit to a
five-year program full-time. As such, we do offer a
part-time option for Year 2. Students can enroll in
individual subjects working towards the
completion of the Foundational Islamic Sciences
year. Accepted students meet with academic
advisors to determine the most suitable part-time
option.
