INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

In the Health Care Sector, life threatening is miscommunication. The errors of miss communication
occur between healthcare practitioner and patients, when they use their second language(L2). The main
aim is to reduce the language barrier and miscommunication in healthcare sector specifically, when one
of the persons is practicing second language. Main factor of using language discrepancy may cause
psychological stress, anxiety, cannot able to discuss medical conditions and not able to follow the
lifesaving treatment. Thus, this research will help to explore the barriers in healthcare sectors such as
hospital and outpatient department.

THEORETICAL APPPROACH

In addition, there are three main theoretical approaches which helps to understand the communication
problem appearing in healthcare center.

1. Psycholinguistic approach
2. Patient-doctor-interaction
3. Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT

Firstly, they introduce the psycholinguistic approach by Segalowitz and Kehayia in which they are using
two key elements semantic and syntactic which helps to deliver the message as per speaker’s point of
view.
Secondly, most important theoretical approach is patient-doctor-interaction. In this the main focus is on
patient-doctor relationship and helps to manipulate their communication.
Lastly, the third theoretical approach is Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT). It helpful to
inspect the patient-practitioner communication when one person is using second language (L2).
Moreover, CAT helps to achieve the social goals, social approval and social identity.

METHOD/DESIGN/DISCUSSION

There will be a video recording in outpatient department and hospital.The research will perform in three
hospital of Australia. This analysis will assist to know about health related problem and their risk on
patients The recording will be done patients and practitioners who are using English or other first
language such as Chinese in order to assess the linguistic ability.Natural conversations between patients
and doctars will be recorded.

The quantitative and Qualitative analysis shall be done on participants. All participants will fill the
questionnaire related to their language background.The videao recording will perform under quiet and
calm environment and the lenghtn of recording between 15 to 20 minutes. The practitioner will record
twickely but patient will record single time only. The practitioner from different profession will be
assessesd such as nurses, and pharmacist.

This study will give the information of language concordant and language discrepant. L2 communication
in a health sector play crucial role. Miscommunication can put negative concequensies such as
psychological stress, miscommunication of health risk factor and treatment. The main challenge of this
study to get the practitioner patient combination. The bilingual speaker who mastered in more than two
language are in limelight here and also the person speaking nore than two language effect on linguistic
sophistication and cultural awareness.
SUMMARY

To know the more information of language barrier, we need to know about their nature and how it
arises. This study will assist us to examine the language barrier in health care settings. However, the
language barrier in health care settings will advise the clinicians about language training program. The
main summary of this research is to reduce the language barrier in health care sector. This will helps us
to explore the patient practitioner communication. It also helps to establish the linguistic elements,
which are contributing to language barrier.
