Project one – photo & design

_________________________________________________________

My first project was based on photography and design, this project involved researching into various art styles
such as pop art and looking into other artists’ work. It also involved producing emulations of other artists work
and exploring different lighting set ups, using the college studio space equipped with spotlights, soft boxes, and
tripods.

I have learnt how set up an appropriate studio space and how to use the different lighting set ups to obtain my
desired outcome. Some of the techniques I have used include use of light and learning how to use manual mode
on a camera. I was also able to learn more about lightroom and photoshop, more specifically the brush tools and
learning how to do double exposures.

John Blakemore, Brian Hubble, and Tim Marrs has been some of the artists I have found inspiration from for this
project. The artists have the similarity of using collage within their work to tell a story or convey a message. Their
work has taught me to try and add more meaning into my work. I further developed the idea of collage with my
Tim Marrs emulation where I used the selection, crop and overlay tools. This went on to become my favourite
work from the project as I was able to emulate Tim’s style whilst making it my own.

I believe the photoshop collage work worked well for me and is a part of my favourite work from this project. I
also enjoyed using different and creative lighting set ups as lighting can change a picture drastically. One of the
weaker parts of this project was my formal elements work. Although it was fun to look for formal elements within
everyday life, I believe the photos aren’t a true reflection of the work I can produce, and the task appears slightly
rushed. One of the problems I had during this project was learning how to use manual mode on a camera. At
first, I was confused as there were so many options and I didn’t understand the controls. After some persistence,
I am now able to use a camera confidently and I know what each setting does. To achieve the next grade, I
believe I need to keep being consistent with my work attitude and continuing to produce high quality work as well
as listen to feedback given to me by my tutor.

I believe this project has been successful as I have learnt a lot of practical and technical skills from it that I will go
on to use in my next projects. I have also enjoyed this project and I am happy with the work I have been able to
produce by myself and with others in my class.
