READING AND WRITING SKILLS
A. Reading Skills "Reading" is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them. 1. Technique of Reading Skills a. Reading Aloud Methods learning to read 1. The phonics method 3. The Language Experience Approach 2. The Look and Say Method 4. The Context Support Method b. Silent Reading Reading silently improves students’ understanding because it helps them concentrate on what they are reading, rather than the pronunciation of individual words. c. Reading Comprehension Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. The whole-word approach is a method to teach reading by introducing words to children as whole units without analysis of their subword parts. d. Independent Reading Independent reading is a term used in educational settings, where students are involved in choosing and reading material (fiction books, non-fiction, magazine, other media) for their independent consumption and enjoyment. 2. Writing Skills Writing is a medium of communication that represents language through the inscription of signs and symbols. In most languages, writing is a complement to speech or spoken language. C. Technique of Writing 1. Copying is the duplication of information or an artifact based only on an instance of that information or artifact, and not using the process that originally generated it. 2. Guided Writing is an opportunity for the teacher to work intensively with a small group of students who share similar learning needs. 3. Substitution Writing is an activities of rewrite sentences or passages by rearranged or in other word there are some parts that are replaced with similar things based on real situations. 4. Free Writing is a prewriting technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but helps writers overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism. D. Material Writing for Children "Teachers select a variety of writing tools and materials to support their literacy program: 1. Writing tools, including colored, medium, and soft lead pencils; pens with a variety of ink colors; and markers, crayons, and chalk in a variety of colors and widths. 2. Lined and unlined paper in assorted colors, textures, sizes, and shapes. 3. Other writing materials, such as index cards, printed forms, postcards, magic slates, erasable marker boards, chalkboards, and clipboards. 4. Bookmaking and greeting-card making materials, such as wallpaper, contact paper, wrapping paper, used greeting cards, staplers, scissors, hole punchers, envelopes, stickers, yarn, and glue. 5. A typewriter, one or more computers with word processing programs, and a printer.
