A. THE ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
An argumentative essay is a piece of formal writing which debates a specific issue, situation
or problem.
TYPES OF ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS:

 The “For and Against” essay is a formal piece of writing wherein a topic is


objectively tackled from opposing points of view; that is to say, you examine both
sides of an issue, discussing points in favor as well as those against, or its cons and
pros. 1Each point should be supported by examples, illustrations, facts (statistical,
scientific, historical, etc.) and/or reasons.
 Cause / Effect essaysin which you shed light on the principle causes of a certain
issue as well as its expected consequences, and put forward some possible remedies.
You may mention your personal opinion in the conclusion.
Opinion essay: This type of essays requires that you clearly state your personal
opinion and support it with convincing arguments. The counter opinion should be
analyzed in a separate paragraph in the body with the aim of showing how weak and
unconvincing the opposing opinion is. Your personal viewpoint ought to be presented
in the introduction and restated in the conclusion.
