Objective: Identify and use indefinite pronouns correctly

Indefinite Pronouns

An indefinite pronoun does not refer to a specific person, thing or place. Use the singular
form of verb with these pronouns (likes, is, etc.)

Some indefinite pronouns are compound words:

People Things Places


some somebody, something somewhere
someone
any anybody, anyone anything anywhere
no Nobody nothing nowhere
no - one
every everybody, everything everywhere
everyone

Use of Indefinite Pronouns

Something, somebody (or someone) somewhere. They are used in affirmative


sentences and in polite requests, offers and suggestions.

She said something.

I saw somebody (or someone).

Would you like something to eat?

He lives somewhere in the south of Cali.

Anything, anybody (or anyone), anywhere. They are used in questions and negative
sentences.

She didn’t say anything.

I didn’t see anybody (or anyone).

Are you doing anything this evening?

You can go anywhere you want.


Nobody, no one, nothing, nowhere. They are used in affirmative sentences but with a
negative meaning (used without not).

The house is empty. Nobody lives there.

She said nothing.

I don’t like this city. There is nowhere to go.

Remember

Negative verb + anybody, anyone, anything

Positive verb + nobody, no one, nothing

Everything, everybody (or everyone), everywhere. We use these indefinite pronouns as


the subject in sentences with a positive verb to mean all the people, things or places in a
group.

Everyone needs friends

Have you got everything you need?

I have lost my watch. I have looked everywhere for it.

That’s Not My Job

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and everybody was sure that somebody would do
it. anybody could have done it, but nobody did it. nobody got angry about that, because it
was somebody ’s job. Everybody thought anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that
Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that everybody blamed when somebody did what Anybody could have done.

5. Write your opinion about the song You got it

It is a very sentimental and very romantic song. It talks about a mutual feeling between two
people and it was observed that the person who is singing it wants to leave a message.
