Objective: Students will listen to music, and describe the expressive elements being used in
that music. Students will describe why they did or did not like a piece of music using musical
elements vocabulary.

Activity #1: Attendance

1. Review Expressive Elements
a. Articulation, Tempo, Dynamics
2. Listen to Panic! At The Disco Version (4min)
a. What expressive elements did you hear?
3. Listen to movie version
a. What expressive elements did you hear?
4. Which version do you like better and why? Talk with your neighbors
a. Make sure students are using the terminology of the expressive elements we
have learned when they are talking with their partner about what they did and
didn’t like

Activity #3: Musette


1. Explain what they are going to listen to
a. Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFarland
2. Listen for the expressive elements
3. What did you hear?
a. What happened to the tempo?
b. How did Bobby’s voice change?
c. How did the use of expressive elements contribute to your experience of the
piece?

Assessment: Were students able to identify the expressive elements being used in these
songs? When they were discussing if they liked them or not with their neighbors, were they
using the vocabulary words they have learned?
