Teaching Grammar

Week 3 Assignment
Grammar Lesson
for 7th Graders

Time Frame: 1 Hr

Objective:

1. Use correct subject/verb agreement in sentences.

Topic:

Grammar: Subject/Verb agreement (3rd person singular –s in present tense)

Procedure:

Pre-Grammar Activity

1. Create your own “Find someone who” or “Find someone who has”

Directions: Look at the pictures in each cell. Compose a sentence/your idea following the concept
below. The 1st cell is given as an example. Then, find a pair, share/talk about your work.

Find someone who / who has…

Example:

Gene likes choco- banana cake.

B. While Grammar

Teacher elicits responses from the students by asking questions based on the sentences formed in the
cells. Stress on the subject and the verb must be obvious while verbalizing the statements to highlight
the grammar points.

Example: Who likes choco- banana cake?

Response: Gene likes Choco-banana cake.
Do you like it too?
Response: Yes, I like it too.

Checking of the responses can be fun and exciting with jazz chants. The teacher leads the chants,
students follow. As the chanting progresses, the key points on rules of grammar become audibly
noticeable. To further understand the sentence structure (syntax), S-V rules that are observed in the
sentences must be tackled in class.
(During the discussion, the teacher uses the RECAST and METALINGUISTICS Error correction Strategy.
C. Post Grammar
Note: To check for the understanding and mastery of the students, the task below serves as a tool to
check their learning.

Performance Output:

Look at the picture below. Then, create/write at least 5 meaningful sentences following the grammar
points discussed a while ago. Encircle the subject and underline the verb in your sentences. Check for
yourself if the sentences follow correct S-V agreement rules.
