What is “Health Informatics”? If pathology is ‘the logic of disease’, then health informatics is the
logic of healthcare. It is the study of how clinical knowledge is created and applied. It is the
rational study of the method we expect regarding healthcare and also the way treatments are
defined and evolved. Study of informatics is basic to the practice of drugs and delivery of
healthcare during this century as anatomy or pathology within the last. Healthcare has been a
relentless topic of discussion in recent years, and health informatics has competed a vital role in
trying to ensure everyone is provided with the best possible quality of healthcare. Health
Informatics (HI) is different from Health Information System (HIS).

HI is defined as knowledge base on studies that pursues the effective uses of medical and
health information and knowledge for scientific inquiry, decision making, through information
systems and technologies, motivated by efforts to boost human health. Examples of HI are
medical and public health informatics. The purpose of health informatics is to manage

information effectively. This requires time to complete and keeping updated. Some necessities
of HI such as undocumented patients’ treatment order and patients don’t get the right treatment
should be avoided. Meanwhile, other varieties of HI are patient management and billings, and
departmental management. Advantages of HI are cost reduction and service improvement.
Managing HI is indeed challenging. Technology keep changing from time to time and the
method used may vary.

Whereas Health Information System(HIS) is defined as a cluster of system used to accustomed

support and enhance healthcare. The utilization of computers and information systems in
healthcare industry is a good move in the right direction. HIS gives evidence for policy decisions
to support higher health outcomes for patients and for populations overall. Examples of HIS
include Electronic Medical Record (EMR). EMR replace the paper version of a patient’s medical
information. The advantages of HIS are good health management and patients will receive the
best treatment.

Thus, HI and HIS are perceived together as two different set of duties.HI roles place less
emphasis on coding and billing also a greater emphasis on information analysis as well as
programming skills. HIS typically require education or experience with medical records, coding
and billing. HI careers require familiarity with clinical guidelines and applications within specialty
areas like public health and biomedical research. HIS careers require familiarity with medical
terminology and medications.

In conclusion, HI and HIS are separate, but often overlapping. Hence, HI is concerned with
managing the database, while HIS is concerned with managing the data. HI is rapidly changing
field that touches nearly every aspect of modern healthcare organization. Healthcare processes
will be easier and organize when HIS is implemented to all medical institution in Malaysia.
