“Considered” is defined in the dictionary as an adjectives that refers to an opinion or a decisión that

someone has reached after a lot of thought before making a decision. The base form of the verb is consider
and it is defined as to think carefully about something.

If we look at the concordances of our search word, we find that thay are possibly more interesting for the
right collocates tan for the left ones.

One of the most frequent usages of considered is in the passive form referring to the subject, that it is
“considered as something or to be something”. The aura of meaning revolves around the fact that the
subject is seen from others (unspecified) in a specific manner, which can be positive or negative. We find
the form “subject+ be form + considered + as (something)/ to be (something)/ a (something)/ the
(something)+ adjective (ex. Attractive, discreditable, desirable)

In addition, in sentences like “Sorcery is considered the more deadly force”, the verb to be is omitted, in
fact they could also say “Sorcery is considered to be the…”.

We can note that when we have this particular passive form with these collocates, the peculiar manner in
which the subject is seen or judged by others, also with collocate “by” for example “ you are considered by
your parents as a failure”. The passive form is also used with other verbs for example “ which is considered
to form part” “the king was considered to have a right” “levels are not considered to pose any significant
risk”.

Secondly, considered is used with this meaning also in the active form, where it is not the subject which is
considered as/to be something but the action is accomplished by someone else or by the subject itself but
the structure is different. For example “ he considered himself to be a simple man” “thwy considered him
the product”. It is very frequent to find the structure “subject+ considered it+ adjective” for example: “he
considered it necessary”.

“he considered humans to be as stupid as…”.

On the other hand, considered is used with the meaning of “take into consideration in a careful manner” or
“take into account”. In this case considered is frequently followed by collocates as “that, in, by, for, verb ing
form”

REGARDED is defined in the dictionary “ to think of in a particular way” and “to pay attention”. The most
frequent structure that we see in analysing concordances is “subject+ be form+ regarded+ as”. A difference
that we can note immediately is that the adverb as cannot be left out as in the case of considered. We must
say “Such settlements are regarded as a matter of considerable responsability” and not “Such settlements
are regarded a matter of…”; but we can say “ such settlements are considered a matter of…”. In this case
regarded and considered could be equivalents becouse they express the meaning of something or someone
which is thought, seen or judged in a particular way. The subject can also regard itself as something or
someone, for example “they regarded themselves as overlords”.

Secondly this equivalent meaning of regarded and considered can be found also in sentences where “by” is
a frequent right collocate. Ex: “The regarded her survival as a miracle”. Also considered is frequently
followed by the preposition “by” but in this case the “as” is not necessary. Regarded in fact does not have
the additional meaning of “take into consideration” or “take into account” in a general way as “considered”
has. In fact we find always “regarded by something/someone as or with…” or sometimes this form is made
with a modal adverb for example “Donna regarded him blankly” or “Kirov regarded him sadly”. The
meaning is the same (to think of/consider/see someone/something in a specific way).

Looking at the left collocates we find also adverbs like “widely” and ”usually”, used to emphasize how
something or someone is seen, judged or recognized in a particular way.
“highly regarded for” shows a meaning of something widely appreciated.

Regarded can be followed also by the preposition “with”, differently from what we see in concordances of
“considered”. For example “black blotches should be regarded with suspicious and removed” to express a
certain point of view from which something or someone is seen.
