Combined Variation

Combined Variation is one that involves the combination of direct, inverse and joint variations.

Notes:
𝑘𝑥 𝑧𝑦
1. The statement “z varies directly as x and inversely as y” means z = or 𝑘 = ,
𝑦 𝑥
where k is a nonzero constant called the constant of proportionality or constant of
variation.
2. The statement “P varies jointly as Q and the square of A, and inversely as the cube of B”
𝑘𝑄𝐴2 𝑃𝐵3
means P = or 𝑘 = .
𝐵3 𝑄𝐴2

In solving problems involving combined variations, the following steps should be applied:

Step 1: Express the statement as an equation using the variables involved.

Step 2: Substitute the values of the quantities/variables involved using the first set of values in order
to get the value of k (the constant of variation) in Step 1.
Step 3: Solve for the unknown variable or quantity using the equation in step 1 and the value of k
and the quantities/variables in the second set of values.

Examples: first set

1. X varies directly as Y, and inversely as Z, and X = 24, when Y = 2 and Z = 3. Find the value
of X when Y= 3 and Z = 6.
𝑘𝑌 second set
Solution: Step 1: X= ·
𝑍
𝑘(2)
Step 2: 24 = · Substitute the values of X = 24, Y= 2, Z = 3 (first set)
3

(24)(3) = 2(k) Multiply both sides by 3

(24)(3) 2k
= Divide both sides by 2 to get the value of k
2 2
36 = k
𝑘𝑌
Step 3: X= · (taken from step 1)
𝑍
(36)(3)
X= Use k = 36, Y = 3, and Z = 6. (second set)
6
X = 18
Therefore, X = 18.

2. M varies jointly as the square of n and p, and inversely as w. When M = 4, n = 2, p = 5 and

w = 10. What is M when n = 20, p = 8, and w = 40?
𝑘𝑛2 𝑝 First set
Solution: Step 1: M= · 2nd set
𝑤
𝑘 (2)2 (5)
Step 2: 4= · Substitute the values of M = 4, n = 2, p = 5,
(10)
w = 10 (first set)
(4)(10) = (k)(4)(5)
(40) (20)k
= Divide both sides by 20 to get the value of k
20 20
2=k
10

𝑘𝑛2 𝑝
Step 3: M =
𝑤
(2)(20)2(8)
M = Use k = 2, n = 20, p = 8, w = 40. (second set)
40
M = 160
Therefore, M = 160.

Let’s Test Ourselves: (Use a separate paper for your answer and do not forget to write your name)

A. Write an equation that represents the relationship between the given variables. Use k as the constant
of variation.
______________1. P varies directly as T and inversely as W.
______________2. D varies jointly as X and Y, and inversely as Z.
______________3. The acceleration A of a moving object varies directly as the distance d it travels and
inversely as the square of the time t it travels.
B. Choose the letter that corresponds to your answer.

_____4. “P varies directly as R and inversely as S” can be written mathematically as

𝑅 𝑘𝑅 𝑘𝑆
a. P = b. P = k RS c. P = d. P =
𝑆 𝑆 𝑘𝑅

_____5. If x varies directly as y and inversely as z, and x = 9 when y = 6 and z = 12, find the value of
x when y = 5, and z = 2.

_____6. If x varies directly with y and inversely with z, and x = 14 when y = 7 and z = 2, find y when
x = 16 and z = 4.
a. 16 b. 18 c. 24 d. 64
_____7. C varies jointly with x and the square of y and inversely with z. When x = 2, y = 1 and z = 4,
C = 100. Find C when x = 3, y = 2 and z =5.
a. 520 b. 480 c. 360 d. 240

C. Solve.

_____8. The time required for an elevator to lift a weight varies jointly with the weight and the
distance through which it is to be lifted and inversely with the power of the motor. If it
takes 30 seconds for a 10-horsepower motor to lift 100 pounds through 50 feet, what size
of motor is required to lift 800 pounds in 40 seconds through 40 feet?
