Prior to commencement of work and as soon as the mobilization start clearing and grubbing will take place. Clearing shall consist of the removal of all trees, bushes, etc, and all other objectionable material including the disposal of all material resulting from the clearing and grubbing. Clearance shall consist also of cleaning out hydraulic structures such as pipes, box and arch culverts. . The Contractor will take the necessary precautions to prevent damage to structures and other private or public property. Material obtained from clearing and/or grubbing shall be disposed of, in borrow pits or other suitable places. Existing structures and installations which will be demolished will take place in such a way as to leave no obstructions to the new Works. The Arab Contractors ‘Osman Ahmed Osman & Co iam - Mega Road Rehabilitation Project, Gontract 1: Ageremariam - Yabello Method Statement of £arth Works a Preparation of Road Bed and Protection of Earthworks:- + Preparation of road bed will start after removal of unsuitable material. * The excavated spaces shall then be backfilled with approved material compacted to the required density imported from sides of the road or from borrow pits which are scattered along the road where sufficient quantities of suitable material are not available from roadway excavation as planned. © The material to backfill the area where unsuitable material was removed shall be non-cohesive sand and gravel or granular portions, weathered rock and stones not exceeding 300mm in any direction, where sand shall be used to reduce the voids between the stones, in waterlégged areas the backfill has to be compacted by heavy vibrating rollers of at least 3 tons or preferably grid rollers of at least 13 tons after the backfill has reached an elevation of approximately 0.50m above the groundwater level. «The shaping and reinstatement of the borrow pit shall be done in such a way that the borrow pit will be properly drained whenever practicable + The material in borrow pits shall be ripped or excavated in a manner that will ensure the effective breaking down of the material. Any oversize particles in material which is to be used for sub-bases, road bases or gravel wearing courses shall be removed by screening or other approved means before it is taken from the borrow pit. + Excavation will take place and made in open cutting by means of Excavators, bulldozers and loaders and hammers for rocks and shall be taken out as nearly as possible to exact dimensions and levels so that the minimum of infilling will afterwards be necessary. * Suitable materials arising from excavation will be used for the construction of embankments, pavement layers. + All surpluses excavated material shall be disposed off site at points approved by the engineer. * Coarse rock encountered in cuts shall be utilized for the construction of the lower layers of fills high enough to accommodate thick layers. © For rock fill; each layer of rock used as fill in embankment shall be systematically compacted by at least 8 passes of a vibrating roller or a grid roller or other equipment approved on site trials. * Rock fill shall be deposited and spread in horizontal layers not exceeding 750mm loose depth. Each layer shall be blinded with granular material before the next layer is placed. Rock fill shall not be used for the top 400mm of the embankment. * Backfilling of excavation shall be compacted in layers not exceeding 200mm thick by using compactors. * Drains shall be so constructed as to avoid damage, caused by erosion, to embankments. 38 Cone nere the road is to be widened and where uncompacted roadbed material occurs below the outer part of the fills, the fill material shall be cut back or cut away to expose the full width of the roadbed widening to be treated. b- Sub-Base Layer:. Source of Materials: from Borrow Bite * Gravel material to be used for sub-base shall be obtained from approved sources in borrow areas. The complete gravel sub-base shall contain no material having a maximum dimension exceeding two thirds of the compacted layer thickness. Construction Procedures: Carriage of the material to the site. Preparation of the previous layer. Sub-base material shall be spread on the approved sub-grade by mechanical means without segregation. The material shall be loosely spread in layers to give a compacted thickness not exceeding 200mm and not less than 100mm. The surface of each completed layer shallbe moistened prior to the construction of the succeeding layer. The material shall be compacted by the use of approved rollers progressing gradually from the outside towards the center of the layer, compacted to 97% of modified AASHTO density. 200mm maximum layer thickness. Each succeeding pass shall overlap the previous pass by at least one third of the roller width. c- Base Layer:- Source of Materials: from Crusher located at km 42 * The crushed stone for the road base shall be graded crushed stone (GB1) obtained from The Arab Contractors Crusher located at road site. Construction Procedures: Adjusting the crushers to produce the required material, the crushed material shall be screened into at least four different aggregate fractions. Carriage of the material to the site. Material to be used for base shall be obtained from approved sources in borrow areas. The complete base shall contain no material having a maximum dimension exceeding two thirds of the compacted layer thickness. Preparation of the previous layer which shall be free from loose or deleterious material. The material shall be placed and spread evenly, watered, mixed, shaped and compacted by methods which shall not disturb the previous layer. Carrying the material to the road site and the Base course material shall be spread using a grader to the required width and such thickness that the specified tolerance requirements are obtained after final compaction. The material shall be compacted by the use of approved rollers progressing gradually from the outside towards the center of the layer, except on super- elevated curves, where the roiling shall begin at the low side and progress to the high side. Each succeeding pass shall overlap the-previous pass by at least one third of the roller width. Rolling shall continlig:ntil the entire ckness of the layer is thoroughly and uniformly compacted to attain a vercentage of no less than 100% from the maximum dry density. Making experimental sector of the layer with 17.5cm thickness after compaction by using the grader. Segregation shall be avoided and the layer shall be free from pockets of coarse or fine material. The material shall be spread in layers not exceeding 200mm and less than 400mm compacted thickness. Thickness exceeding 200mm shall be laid in two or more layers. Any new layer of less than 75mm compacted thickness shall be bonded to the previous layer by scarifying the previous layer to a depth so that the total compacted thickness of the new layer plus the scarified portion of the previous layer will not be less than 100mm. Recycling of existing road payment Before milling is commenced, the surface of the existing pavement shall be clean and free from soil and other deleterious matter. The existing pavement shall be milled if accepted to the depth described in the Shop Drawing by the use of an approved milling machine. The milled material will be stock piled in the road side shoulders. Any material which is required to be added, to either supplement or modify the milled material, shall be evenly spread and thoroughly mixed into the milled material to form a homogeneous material prior to compaction. The material shall be then placed, spread and compacted as specified by the Engineer.
