4.

C -Reflection

What this competency explains is how the candidate can instruct students with assignments as

well as verbal instruction based on theory, research on instructional linguistic, information on

second language acquisition as well as literacy development. The candidate knowing that each

student comes to class with their own unique needs because of their background, culture,

language, personality, and interest of learning. As a future teacher it is important to meet ELL’s

where they are to understand and be able to learn.

The evidence I have chosen are my experience in learning from my dual language learning

classroom from my practicum, in addition my lesson demand plan for 314 and finally my needs

analysis for my Teaching and learning course 339. For my student practicum I worked in

Grandview Washington, in Harriet Thomson Elementary 2nd grade in a dule language

classroom. The students in the classroom came from all level stages of English learning. The

assessments in some cases where in both Spanish their native language as well as English.

Through my practicum I was able to instruct some of the assignments for mathematics and what

was a different experience with that, is I was able to respond to the students in their native

language if this helped them understand what the learning task. If everything was said or read

again I would have to make sure English instructions was repeated as well. My Teaching and

Learning 413 into to ESL in the classroom course the piece of evidence I have chosen is my

Strategy Demonstration lesson plan, the language objective in my lesson is why I put this peace

as part of my evidence. Through this I have learned of the importance of why speaking and re-

reading information is important to the learning of my Ell’s. With evidence from the course, we

have over, and I was able to put together my very own Lesson plan accommodation to this
competency as well. Then I have my Needs Analysis from Teaching and learning 339, where I

was able to interview a student that was an ELL, I was able to use my reading from the course to

know what adjustment needed to be made for the student to participate. What I learned was that

the students needed the questions to be read to him orally and the student also needed assistance

writing down his answer these where simple adjustment that I can make in my future classroom

for achieving student learning success through my assignment as well as instruction.

Prior to this class I had forgotten about some of the assignments that I did, with that it did not

cross my mind to use them as part of my ELL portfolio. As I looked for evidence, I thought these

pieces best fit the competency. I feel that there will be changes due to the structure of the

classroom now being taught through zoom or other online methods, because of covid that might

change the way in which these assignments and instructions were catered to in the time in which

I did them. what I have learned I’m sure will be useful to my future teachings once things are

back to normal, I believe that the pieces work well with the competency and showing my

understanding on what I have learned.
