Portfolio Assignment B
Planning for Home-School Communication (60 Points)
1. Describe your plan for establishing and maintaining communication with
families (20 points).
Be sure to include specific details and address the following: How will your plan ensure
consistent, two-way communication with families and how will it strengthen your
relationship with students. How will you ensure that your plan is culturally responsive
and that you are providing access to all on a regular basis?
Communication with family for me will look like the following, after learning in class last
week of the app called remind. I was curious to learn more on what it was used for,
after looking at the app I discovered that I can not only communicate with an individual
students and parents, but also have group chats if I wish to or class discussion bords
through the app. The feature that I think will be useful to get that one on one with the
parent ins the individual text feature because u can quickly in my break or during class
send out a message to one of my children’s parent and let them know “ hello Mr. Davis I
just wanted to let you know that Jaime did so great in team work today I see so much
growth in his team bonding!” through this app its quick its simple and it invites the
parent into their children’s learning. I Know I have to consider the fact that not all
parents will have a “advance:” phone for my alternative I will be sending letters home
and If possible without covid having conferences in person or online conference calls
whatever works best. I could even ask the parent for what way they would like me to
communicate with them and be open to new ideas or suggestions.
2. Write a letter introducing yourself (20 points)
Provide some information about what students and their families should expect this
upcoming year in your classroom. This is your first step in establishing an environment
of “Invitational Learning” for all families. Please include information about yourself and
give a summary of your plans/goals/expectations for the year. Be sure to think about
“Invitational Learning” ideas (will families feel positive about the first day of school after
they read your letter?).

Letter to family
T&L 310 Classroom Management, 2020

Hello,

I am writing to you because I am not only exited but honored to be able to teach your
student this school year. I welcome you all parent and student to join me on the journey of our
students learning and growth. My hope is that through this letter I can discuss with you the
following things, who I am, so a little more about me, what goals I have this school year for the
class, and how I plan to achieve them.
I will begin by sharing who I am, my name is Ms. Roman. I was a student at Washington
State University, where I received my Elementary Education degree with a add on in ELL. I was
a student at Granger High school, Middle School, and Elementary school. For this I would like to
take a second to say “Go Cougs!’ and “Go Spartans!”, if we can not agree on that will I hope we
can agree on (insert here the school I will be working for mascot for example “Go fox!” for the
pullman franklin elementary). What I like to do with my free time is play card games, watch a
movie, when possible go on a hike or a good walk. My hobbies are picture collecting, writing,
and cooking for family and friends.
My goals first and foremost are to make sure we are constantly working to reach the
(grade I will be teaching example 3 grade) learning standards knowledge as well as
understanding. For the class that we can follow class instructions such as, being respect and listen
to your classmates and teacher. Always do your best making sure to respect others as well as their
property and remembering to always be kind. As for my students and I be ready to learn daily.
My plans to achieve those goals are simple collaboration with student, parent, with my
coworkers and district staff or anyone one looking out for the growth of the students. To my
parents I want to remind you that I want your student success as much as you do, we need to
work together on what works best for our students. The are the priority always that they are safe,
learning, and successful is my end goal.
This school year is going to be amazing! I am excited to get started, please if you have
any questions do not hesitate to ask or reach out to me.
Thank you for your time,

Ms. Roman

3. Finally, our text identified three communication skills for addressing

student conflict directly (20 points)
Three Skills: Empathetic responding, constructive assertiveness, and problem solving
(Chapter 10- Communication Skills for Teaching in Evertson & Emmer). Summarize the
main ideas of these three skills. Also, please identify and discuss the skill you are most
comfortable utilizing and the skill you feel you need to develop.
what I have learned constructive assertiveness is the ability to stand up for
one’s legislative rights, the assertive teacher is supportiveness and helpful
does not deride or attack the students involved. The empathic response it
means reasoning with the student by listening and talking through the
problem. Problem solving is the way you go about dealing with conflict for
me this is what is going to be the skill more comfortable utilizing because is
on used throughout your entire life and makes sense naturally. The one I
think personally I am going to need to develop is probably out of the three
is constructive assertiveness.
