Abstract
In thisfirstpaperdealingwithHeraclitus'doctrine as such (as opposed to thetexts bothofour
sourceson him and of thesurviving fragments of his book), theauthorexaminesand discus-
ses tworecentcontroversial articleswiththecontentofwhichhe sympathizes - one byGábor
Betegh(2007) on the cosmological(physical) status of Heraditus' psyche^ the otherby
and
AryehFinkelberg (1998) on Heraclitus' cosmogony and the realityof a Heraditean world
conflagration. This examinationis aimed, first,at fostering "marginal"opinionswhichthe
authorbelievesto be fundamentally correct- and the rejectionof whichsince timesimme-
morial(bySchleiermacher and others)he considersto havegreatly harmedand hamperedour
understanding of the Ephesianphilosopher ; second, at introducingsome personalcorrec-
tionsand additionsto theseopinions; and third,at illustrating theadvantagesofa deliberately
unprejudicedapproachtowardsour sources,an approachbased on thepresumption of inno-
cence, knowledgeability and intelligenceforall our informers and on the rejectionof any
rejection[thisis nota dittography!] of anysourceon groundof meresuspicion.
Among the proposed novelties(or olden oblivitions)the followingparticularly deserve
to be underscored:(1) the defenseof the authenticity of "fr.Β 76" DK qua threedifferent
fragments and (2) the reconstruction of Heraditus' systemof fourphysicalexhalations-
both of whichare connectedwiththe notionof a worldsoul; and (3) the interpretation of
Plat. Soph.242 C - 243 A [T 132] as confirming (and not as contradicting) Arist.De cael.
279b12 [T 170] and (4) the cosmogonicalinterpretation of F 31 - both of whichpresup-
pose the realityof a Heracliteanecpyrosis.
Yet,since the author'sdogmatismdoes not extendbeyond the requirementof having
recourseto (methodo)logicallysound procedures,he is readyto give up any conclusionof
whichitcan be proventhatit is irreconcilably contradictedbya sounderone and supported
by none.
