Social Dimensions in Education
Assignment 1

1. Do you believe that the problem on stakeholders’ participation would be much

lesser if parents played the same part in the education as it did during the Roman
times? Explain.
Yes, I agree that stakeholders’ participation would be much lesser if parents
played the same part in the education as it did during the Roman times. The
parents will be directly involved in the decision making related to the governance,
operation and improvement of the school. If parents would have direct
participation as stakeholders, no collective entities, such as local businesses,
organizations, advocacy groups, committees, media outlets, and cultural
institutions can have active role to the school. Parents can take actions on their
own without much consideration to the broader community.

2. Which educational system, Spartan or Athenian, would be more effective in the

implementation of public health protocols Why
For me, Athenian educational system would be more effective in the
implementation of public health protocols. The Athenians value knowledge and
beauty in which proper hygiene is very much put into consideration. During the
primary years of the students, they were taught on how to keep their body clean
and neat. It was instilled to their minds the importance of having proper hygiene
to make one’s body healthy and beautiful. Today, if we really put the importance
of health and beauty in our hearts and minds, it would be really easier for us to
implement and follow the public health protocols. This would be helpful especially
on the prevention of spreading virus and disease.

3. What educational practices of our schools that can be traced from Quintilian
principles. Provide at least 3.
These are the following educational practices of schools based from Quintilian
principles:
 In every subject areas, teachers must give students activities that involve
reading, writing and speaking. One of the principles of Quintillion is that
speaking, writing, and reading were the most dominant skills. These basic
skills should be given much importance.
 Quintilian believed that continual practice is in fact the most effective way
of learning. An activity that can be based from this principle is the Reading
program of the Department of Education such as Every Child is a Reader
Program, Remedial Reading Program, and many more. Teachers from the
elementary monitor their students by letting them practice reading
constantly. They also give direct intervention to students reading ability.
 To speak well is very important according to Quintilian. In today’s
educational practices, teachers should not only be the one to do the
talking. Students are given opportunities to speak in the class for them to
express their ideas and thoughts fluently. Some schools also conduct
competitions or contests that uses students; speaking ability. It can be an
impromptu speaking contest, debate, storytelling, oratory speech and
many more.
