LECTURE 3 – SUPPLY CHAIN DRIVERS & METRICS

38
Driver VS Metric

Driver = determining factor

Metric = a quantity
 to express the performance of a
process

39
REMEMBER THIS!
Strategic Fit  Competitive and supply chain strategies
have aligned goals.

RESPONSIVENESS efficiency

A company may fail because of a lack of strategic fit or because its

processes and resources do not provide the capabilities to execute the
desired strategy.

SCM – SITI DWI LAZUARDI 40

REMEMBER THIS!
How is Strategic Fit achieved?
- It sounds easy, but in reality quite difficult!
1. There is no supply chain strategy that is always right.
2. There is a right supply chain strategy for a given
competitive strategy.
- Commitment by top executives!
Without proper communication between groups and coordination by
high-level management, strategies are not likely to achieve strategic
fit.

To improve SC Performance in terms of
Six Drivers of SC Performance Responsiveness & Efficiency

42
Supply Chain Drivers
1. Facilities
 Physical locations 
Where product is stored,
assembled, or fabricated.
 Two major types :
 Production sites
 Storage sites

43
Supply Chain Drivers
2. Inventory Encompasses all raw
materials, work in
process and finished
goods within a supply
chain.
 Considering high
inventory levels

reduce efficiency 
high costs.

44
Supply Chain Drivers
3. Transportation Require moving
inventory from point to
point in the SC.
 Entail many
combinations of modes
& routes.
 Use faster mode 
More Responsive  BUT
Less Efficient (High Cost)

45
Supply Chain Drivers
4. Information Consists of Data &
Analysis concerning Facilities,
Inventory, Transportation, Costs,
Prices and Customers.
 Potentially the
Biggest driver  directly
affects on other drivers.
 Presents the opportunity to
make more responsive &
more efficient.

46
Supply Chain Drivers
5. Sourcing The choice of WHO will
perform, such as: Production,
Storage, Transportation, or
Information Management.
 Determines what
functions a firm performs
& what functions the firm
outsources.
 It affects both
responsiveness and
efficiency of a supply
chain.
47
Supply Chain Drivers
6. Pricing Determines how much a
firm will charge for the
goods & services.
 Affects the behavior of
goods & services’ buyer.
 Differential pricing
provides the different
customer’s behavior.

48
Supply Chain Metrics
1. Facilities  Components of Facilities
Decisions :
 Role (Flexible, dedicated or
combination of both)
 Location (centralize or decentralize)
 Capacity (large or small amount)

 Facility-Related Metrics:
 Capacity
 Physical locations  Where product  Utilization
is stored, assembled, or fabricated.
 Processing time, Idle time
 Two major types :  Production cost per unit
 Production sites  Etc…
 Storage sites

49
Supply Chain Drivers
2. Inventory  Components of Inventory
Decisions :
 Cycle Inventory (average amount to
satisfy demand)
 Safety Inventory
 Seasonal Inventory
 Level of Product Availability

 Inventory-Related Metrics:
 Cash-to-cash cycle time
 Encompasses all raw materials,  Average inventory
work in process and finished goods  Average replenishment batch size
within a supply chain.
 Obsolete inventory
 Considering high inventory levels  Etc…
reduce efficiency.
50
Supply Chain Drivers
3. Transportation  Components of Transportation
Decisions :
 Design of Trans. Network
 Choice of Trans. Mode

 Transportation-Related Metrics:
 Average inbound & outbound trans.
cost
 Entails moving inventory from point to  Average incoming shipment size
point in the SC.
 Average inbound & outbound trans.
 Require many combinations of modes & cost per shipment
routes.
 Etc…
 Use faster mode  More Responsive
 BUT Less Efficient (High Cost)

51
Supply Chain Drivers
4. Information  Components of Information
Decisions :
 Pull vs Push
 Coordination & information sharing
 Sales & Operation Planning
 Enabling Technology

 Information-Related Metrics:
 Consists of Data & Analysis concerning
Facilities, Inventory, Transportation, Costs,  Forecast horizon/ period
Prices and Customers.  Forecast error
 Potentially the Biggest driver   Variance from plan
directly affects on other drivers.
 Etc…
 Presents the opportunity to make more
responsive & more efficient.

52
Supply Chain Drivers
5. Sourcing  Components of Sourcing
Decisions :
 In-house or outsource
 Supplier selection
 The choice of WHO will perform, such  Procurement
as: Production, Storage, Transportation,
or Information Management.
 Determines what functions a firm
performs & what functions the firm
outsources.  Sourcing-Related Metrics:
 It affects both responsiveness and  Day payable outstanding
efficiency of a supply chain.  Average purchase price
 Range of purchase price
 Etc…

53
Supply Chain Drivers
6. Pricing  Components of Pricing Decisions :
 Pricing and economies of scale
 Everyday low pricing vs Hi-Lo pricing
 Fixed price vs Menu pricing

 Determines how much a firm will  Pricing-Related Metrics:

charge for the goods & services.  Profit margin
 Affects the behavior of goods &  Day sales outstanding
services’ buyer.  Average sale price
 Etc…
 Differential pricing provides the
different customer’s behavior.
