Archangel Metatron
 Support for embodiment. Metatron is one of only two archangels (along with Sandalphon)
who was once embodied in human form. They are the only ones whose named don’t end
with ‘el.’ Although he vibrates at very high frequency he is also practical. He is dedicated to
teaching the practical application of esoteric wisdom, and helps sensitive people with
practical life circumstances.
 Soothing overtaxed nervous systems. Metatron is a helper of sensitive children and those
who have difficulty with embodiment because of their connection to the light. Help with
insomnia. Support for all forms of nervous system ‘overload.’ Including media images,
psychic energies, social situations.
 Sacred Geometry and Co-creation. Metatron is associated with the Merkaba and also
Metatron’s Cube. Both of these forms are found within the Flower of Life. The Flower of
Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017
Life is the representation of the universal grids of light that create physical form. These
embedded forms – merkaba and metatron’s cube - represent highly evolved or coherent
geometric frequencies. The Merkaba is also known as a chariot – such as Ezekiel’s chariot in
the Bible.
 Transcending Space-Time. Metatron supports manifesting through the malleability of the
physical universe. Both space and time can be shifted and shaped with Metatron’s help. One
technique is by aligning with the forms of sacred geometry. Through your clear connection
to these forms you can come into clearer relationship with these potentials of Kether.

Principles:
Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017
Kether represents pure consciousness beyond all categories. It is timeless, a point that crystallizes
out of the Ein Soph, and commences the process of emanation that moves down the tree of life and
ends in Malkuth. In trying to comprehend Kether and what is beyond this Sephira, you can expect
to find many contradictions and paradoxes. It’s impossible for the mind to fully grasp concepts like
"Negative Light." To access the concepts, just allow the images to sink in as you consider them and
let them play in your subconscious. The experience will come in momentary flashes of expanded
feeling or actual experiences of light.

Kether exists beyond what we can imagine. Kether expresses itself through the Universe, but it
is not its expression. From MacGregor Mathers we have the statement "Kether is the Malkuth of the
Unmanifest.” For example, we create physical structures and forms in the world but we are not our
creations.

It is believed that anyone who truly touches Kether at its highest level will pass over and become a
teacher, guide or godlike being in their own right. They will become more than mortal and lose their
corporeal shell. This is an inevitable outcome of the final success of following the Great Work.

Kether is the power-point of the Initiate. Kether is crucially important in working with all other
Sephiroth, for it is here that we learn the true tool of the Adept, which is the release of attachment
to outcome. Kether is concerned with the handling of forces, and ultimately bringing them through
into manifestation, however Kether does not care what form the forces may assume.

If the adept is able to focus on the intention, without trying to dictate the literal form of the result,
then the forces will assume the form that is most consistent with their nature. The result will thus be
truer to Cosmic Law than any design which our limited human knowledge and understanding could
assign. In other words, how the form unfolds is of little importance. What is important is the ability
to align with and bring in the light.

Kether is aligned with Pure Principle. Sustaining alignment with Kether is necessary for full
expression of all of the other Sephiroth. Without connection to the light, all other virtues are
susceptible to illusion (becoming ungrounded). Ungrounded magic, even wisdom and compassion,
can be as harmful as uninspired materialsm of Malkuth or unapolpgetic aggression in Geburah.
Kether energy helps us stay balanced and helps us heal and be fully present in this world.

Kether is intimately connected to Malkuth. Matter draws the light. Struggle with form leads to
separation, and the realm of Qliphoth. The mystical path must be grounded in embodiment or we
become separated from Source. Physical activity is necessary for grounding and to embody the light.
This is the secret of the power of the mantra: “Chop Wood, Carry Water.”

Metatron is our helper and supports all forms of embodiment. A reminder from D. Fortune:
We invoke the angels and helpers through the clarity of our intentions. No spell can bring them. It is
our alignment with the realm that invokes their presence.

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Notes on Practices and Symbols:
 Dion Fortune says that there are no magical ceremonies or practices for the upper supernals.
They can only be touched through direct experience of the energies.
 The force of Kether is the perception of light and expansion above. It can’t be accessed
directly but it can be invoked.
 The Crown represents something above us – not within, like the halo in traditional religious
paintings. It sits above the head and represents that which we can’t comprehend with our
minds.
 The Lamp represents the light of creativity. This is the same lamp held by the Tarot arcana,
the Hermit, as s/he poises on the mountain top, alone and seeking wisdom or light.
 Geometrically, Kether is the Point, representing the first potential of existence.
 The Swastika is also a symbol of Kether, but one must look beyond the Third Reich’s
corruption. The Swastika is one of the most ancient of symbols, its four swirling arms
represent the swirlings of energy since the beginning of time. Earliest depictions are found
on Paleolithic carvings on mammoth ivory from the Ukraine, dated around 10,000 bce
(Barbara Walker, Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets).

Suggested Practices for the Month:

 Releasing attachment. What does it mean to “channel” pure potential? In what ways can you
explore being a vehicle for bringing light into the world, and at the same time completely
release attachment to the outcome or form of the result?
 Create an altar with symbols of Kether. Include the Ace’s of Tarot or related spreads you
have received. You can also include magical tools and images on your altar.
 Learn about Archangel Metatron. Call on his wise support for any of the aspects listed
above. You might experiment with automatic writing to consult him for healing, release of
painful memories, past life information, or access to other forms of wisdom.
 Review the practices of Chokmah and Binah and Tipareth. Explore them in relationship to
Kether since these Sephiroth are the first expressions or movements of Kether, as light
comes into form in the world.

The Second Sephirah
Chokmah – Wisdom
‫חכמה‬
Key Words: “Spirit from Spirit,” “Splendor of Unity,” “Crown of Creation,” the Supernal Father,
the Masculine aspect of the Divine.

Chokmah is the “Illuminating Intelligence.” The Yod of the Tetragrammaton. This is Force before
Form. The great stimulator of the Universe. The expression of the Will to manifest, to create
multiplicity from unity. The pure expression of light. Unconditioned creativity. Yetzirich text). Binah
receives this impulse and births it into form. “Let there be light,” Genesis 1:3

It is difficult to talk about Chokmah since it can only be experienced at the transcendent level. In
our daily life we experience Chokmah only as it is filtered through the Sephirah below the abyss.
Greer explains this with the metaphor of light being transparent or invisible to our physical eyes.
The only way we can “see” light, is when it’s broken into wavelengths through a prism.

The Position on the Tree: Top of the Pillar of Mercy. Second position on the lightening path,
receives the impulse of creation from Kether
Spiritual Experience: The Vision of God Face-to-Face
Magical Image: A Mature Man, Bearded Male Figure
Illusion of the Sphere: Independence, Ego-self mistaken for higher self
The Affirmation: (This refers to the perfect law of the primal Will-to-Good.)
“Through me its unfailing Wisdom takes form in thought and word.”

Chokmah Exists in Complementary Polarity with Binah

Briah and Chokmah can’t be understood alone. They represent the Creative polarity of the Divine
masculine and feminine emerging from Unity (Kether). Together they create a complementary
whole. One way to experience the complementary aspects is by working with the paired Knights and
Queens of Tarot. See “Binah Overview” for table of correspondences.

will help you creatively develop new ideas and ways of understanding the world.
Notes on Chokmah

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Chokmah is the emanating influence of Kether. It’s easiest to understand it this way, rather than
thinking of it as a force in and of itself. Crowley says, “From the point of view of the ordinary
person, Chokmah is really no. 1 and not no. 2, because he is the first manifestation; Kether is
completely concealed, so that nobody knows anything about it at all.” (p.177)

“Wisdom” refers to complete and infinite knowledge. It is Binah “Understanding” that integrates
the meaning of this knowledge, thus bringing it to form.

Chokmah and Binah represent the archetypal positive and negative, primordial Male and Female.
From these primary pairs of opposites the pillars of the Universe spring, and between these Pillars is
woven the web of Manifestation.” –Dion Fortune

Notes on Practices and Symbols:

 Dion Fortune says that there are no magical ceremonies or practices for the upper supernals.
They can only be touched through direct experience of the energies.
 The force of Chokmah is a powerful surge of energy, moving through from crown down.
It’s essential to be grounded so the “down-rushing force can be directed into the earth –
otherwise we could burst! Once it cycles down then it can cycle back up. (Solar Breath)
 Inner Robe of Glory – signifies inner light, spiritual vision, the subjective, internal aspect of
the Illuminating Intelligence

Suggested Practices for the Month:

 Learning to use the Chokmah spark wisely. This starts with recognizing the voice of inner
wisdom from the voice of the ego.
 The power of thought and memory. Reframing past circumstances to create positive
outcomes.
 Create new habits of thought. When you observe habitual responses of impatience, anger, or
stress (Binah), channel your creative spark (Chokmah) into new patterns and habits. Observe
rather than react, then make a creative choice from your still center.
 The practice of speaking your truth – Use the teaching of the Knights in the Four Fold Way
to practice creating through intention language and thought. Which truth will you choose?
 Create an altar with symbols of Chokmah. Include the Two’s of Tarot, the Knights, or
related spreads you have received. You can also include magical tools and images.
 Learn about Archangel Raziel. Call on his wise support for any of the aspects listed above.
You might experiment with automatic writing to consult him for healing, release of painful
memories, past life information, or access to other forms of wisdom.

over them, which represents her role watching over people with love and understanding.
Sometimes Tzaphkiel is also shown holding a golden chalice in her hands, which symbolizes
the flowing waters of knowledge.

The Astrology of Saturn

 Saturn is the planet of form and structure. Saturn unites form with purpose. One of the
lessons of Saturn is to learn to work with form intentionally in order to transcend
perceived limitations.
 Saturn has two important and complementary aspects. The first aspect creates external
structures that endure and build over time, including physical form as well as the
structures of culture and society. The transcendent aspect of Saturn involves the hidden
nature of form upon which external form is created.
 To fully understand the power of Saturn one must learn to access inner form and release
attachment to what has already been created.
 In Tarot Saturn is associated with The Universe. This is the card of the Major Arcana,
expressing totality, in which we come into full experience of our relationship with the
Universe. This includes embracing the paradox of individuality and unity, Self and
Other. Saturn supports this process of full self-realization.

Additional Notes on Binah

Abyss.

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Suggested Practices for the Month
 Practice observing with the inner eye. Remain present and ask to see the larger truth rather
than what you expect to see.
 Create new habits of thought. When you observe habitual responses of impatience, anger, or
stress, open yourself to release the habit and then invoke the creative spark that comes from
Chokmah into expressing new patterns and habits. Observe rather than react, then make a
creative choice from your still center.
 Letting Go. Use the teaching of the Queens in the Four Fold Way to practice releasing
attachment to circumstances.
 Create an altar with symbols of Binah. Include the Three’s of Tarot, or related spreads you
have received. You can also include magical tools such as a chalice and stones such as pearl.
 Learn about Saturn. Where is it located in the sky now? (Saturn is currently in the zodiac sign
of Capricorn, which supports getting to the root of things – determining the ‘bottom line.’)
Where is it located in your astrological birth chart and/or solar return? What are the qualities
of Saturn that you desire to integrate into your own life?
 Learn about Archangel Tzaphkiel. Call on her help to access and increase the qualities of
Binah in your life. She is the archangel of seeing, clearing, of love and self acceptance.
 Explore the pearl as a symbol of the Divine Mother. Use this stone (or star sapphire) as an
amulet or talisman to activate your own Binah flow and ward off interfering energies.

 Strengthen relationship energy fields (shape of Vesica Piscis) by intentionally practicing
“Thank you” and “You’re Welcome.”

The Fourth Sephirah

God Name Al, El, ‫אל‬ Color Blue
Archangel Tzadkiel, Justice of God, Geometry Tetrahedron, equal-armed
Archangel of Right-doing cross, square-based pyramid
Angels Chasmalim, Shining Ones Tools Wand, Scepter, Crook, Orb
Physical Jupiter ♃, expansion and Animal Unicorn
Opportunity Deities Amun, Zeus, Athena
Virtue Obedience Stone Amethyst, Sapphire

Microcosm Memory

The Affirmation:
“From the exhaustless riches of its Limitless Substance I draw all things needful,
both spiritual and material.”
Chesed is, above all, the sphere of creation. As the first Sephirah below the abyss, this the first step
of energy becoming matter. Chesed gives form to the creative impulses it receives from Binah, and
begins the process of manifestation through all of the remaining Sephirah. The word “Love” is the
best summary of Chesed. Everything that passes through Chesed is imprinted with the memory of
Source, expressed through divine love and compassion. In Chesed is manifest God's absolute,
unlimited benevolence and kindness.[

The alternate title of Chesed is “Gedulah,” meaning Majesty or Greatness. This is the Greatness of
awakened consciousness, the ability to be sovereign over all of the realms of creation. As the highest
Sephirah below the Abyss, Chesed has access to all of the gifts and abilities of the lower realms.
The number Four anchors the structural form of all that follows. All expressions of order, law,
organization and compassion are part of this realm. The geometry of Chesed embodies the bridge
from consciousness to physical matter. In the tetrahedron 3-D form emerges. Binah (3) gives birth
to the world. The tetrahedron is the basic structure that creates the matrix of light, the energetic
grids, from which all subsequent form emerges. The cross also emerges from Four, and expresses
the four elements which are the beings of consciousness that bring the Universe into form.

Personal Qualities and Aquisitions:

 Giving, expanding, nurturing. Generosity, grace, benevolence, and higher Love.
 Abundance, prosperity, good fortune, opportunity. The inner ‘Yes.”
 Sovereignty. Power.. Social structure. Leadership. Influence, Prestige.
 Hearing the Inner Call; Obedience to higher self and the greater good.
 Planning and vision. Covenants and laws. Social structure and guidelines.
Invoke Chesed to initiate construction, expansion, improvement, growth, and organization, and for
the power to manifest an idea into being. Emotionally, Chesed can be used to open the flow of pure
love and compassion in your life, as well as experiences of bliss, joy, and happiness.
For protection, Chesed can be used to banish all forms of bigotry, hypocrisy, tyranny, and gluttony
from your own life or from the interference of others.

Chesd in the Four Worlds

Name of God: Al, El, ‫“ אל‬God ” The highest image of God possible.
El was the common name for a god in ancient Near Eastern cultures. It may come from a root
meaning “to be strong” or “power,” connoting not only might but authority and transcendence. The
Hebrew letters Aleph (The Fool) and Lamed (Adjustment) offer clues to the significance of the
comprehensive and collective power of this name.
In the Qabalah, the term El is often combined with adjectives, resulting in names like El Elyon (the
Most High God), El Hai (the Living God), El Shaddai (God Almighty) and El Olam (God
Everlasting). The names of the archangels end with “-ael” (e.g. Michael) meaning “of God.” The
name Israel (meaning “he strives with God”) also includes the divine name El..

Archangel Tzadkiel: Justice of God, Archangel of Right Doing, Prince of Beneficence.

Tzadkiel can be called on for help to access and increase the qualities of Chesed in your life. He is
the archangel of freedom, benevolence, mercy, and the patron Angel of all who forgive.
He assists in absorbing and transmuting impurities in order to raise frequency into higher
consciousness. He helps you to see the truth in yourself, and to know that your potential is limitless.

 Tzadkiel vibrates in the 7th (violet) ray. This frequency supports us seeing ourselves clearly.
All that is unnecessary can fall away without blame. The quality of compassion sees the truth
without blame. It simply is. What is not part of our highest potential we are able to release.
 Tzadkiel supports the quality of transmutation of all forms of negativity. Ask him for
support in realizing your full potential and releasing those habits or patterns of thought that
hold you back or limit you.

Questions for Reflection

 One of the qualities of Chesed is Abundance. In what ways can you align with your ability to
receive the unlimited and boundless stream of “all things needful?” Call on Archangel
Tzadkiel for support in releasing limiting beliefs and experiences around wealth and lack.
 The virtue of Chesed is Obedience. In what ways can you more truly align with the callings
of your Higher Self?
 The word “Covenant” is a central aspect of Chesed. What does it mean to keep your
covenants? To whom and what have you pledged obedience? Are there pledges or promises
that limit your authority (inner alignment) and no longer serve you?
 In personal relationships the quality of Chesed’s loving kindness is experienced as “Flow,”
given freely without restriction. How can you expand the experience of Flow in your life by
freely connecting to others?
 One of the shadow aspects of leadership in Chesed is the quality of spiritual tyranny, which
means to impose spiritual authority over others. This is seen in all the ways in which people
surrender freedom by aligning themselves with a spiritual leader or organized belief system.
In what ways do you participate in spiritual tyranny? (either as victim or perpetrator)
 Cultivation of Chesed opens the flow of unconditional love.
o In what ways do you express love and allow it to flow in your life? In what ways is
the flow of love restricted? How can you break through habits of isolation through
intentional giving and sharing of yourself?
o The flow of love affects every cell and all aspects of your physical health. In what
ways can you increase the flow of love within your own body?
 Tzadkiel is known as the patron angel of all who forgive. In what ways can the Flow of
Chesed help you extend forgiveness to yourself and others?

Geburah is the realm of power and the disciplined will to understand the forces of limitation as they
are expressed throughout the Universe, including our personal experience. Geburah acts as the
regulator to the expansive energy of Chesed. It includes the experiences of challenge, conflict and
suffering because it serves to regulate and bring life to balance. In Geburah we are accountable for
our actions and we learn right use of power through the qualities of self discipline and inner stability.

Key Words for Geburah: Justice, Severity, Discipline, Focus, Force, Might, Power, Courage,
Restraint, Fear, Challenge, Suffering, Judgment, Karma, Inner Strength.

The Position on the Tree: Geburah is the midpoint and fulcrum of the Pillar of Severity.
Spiritual Experience – The Gift of Geburah is “The Vision of Courage.”
Magical Image: A Warrior Queen on a Chariot in Full Armor with Drawn Sword

Personal Qualities and Acquisitions

Work in Geburah helps us learn to contain force, express the right use of power, and develop our
inner authority. In Geburah we understand the beneficial actions of karma and the necessary laws
of cause and effect. We learn to operate within the natural laws of balance and act within these
constraints for the greater good. “Geburah is the great initiator for it destroys in order to make way
for the true works of the spirit,” - Fielding.
In our personal lives, Geburah can represent experiences of challenge and even suffering. As we
work with this realm we access its powers in order to reassess and adjust. We recognize the
opportunity to correct what is out of balance or false.

In Geburah we can access greater initiative and clearer judgment. Geburah. gives us the courage to
face things squarely, the clarity to see things clearly for what they are, and the strength to change
them.

All of the qualities and elements of Geburah are available to help us on the path of connection to
our authentic power and strength.

The Polarity of Geburah and Chesed
Geburah exists in dynamic relationship with Chesesd. Neither realm can exist without the balancing
force of the complementary polarity. As you review the list of qualities feel the way you can balance
between the polarities.

challenges experienced in this realm. Because the success of Geburah is experienced through the fire

Geburah in the Four Worlds

The Name of God: Elohim Gebor, Gods of Strength and Power
This name can be feminized to Elohim Giborah. Older Semitic tribes, of which the Hebrew are one,
had a Goddess of War and Love called Anat or Anatha who was said to be the wife of Yahweh,
although another of her titles was the Compasssionate Virgin. Anat did not initiate wars, but fought
and finshed them. This emphasizes Geburah as not the cause of imbalance but the cure. - Jeff Harrison
and Karen Charboneau-Harrison
Archangel Khamael

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Archangel Khamael, “The Burner of God” Angel of Justice and Severity. Archangel Khamael (also
known as Sammael) intervenes and protects in order to defend against all forms of abuse of power.
He also helps us by removing obstacles from our path, even those of which we’re not aware. He
facilitates profound changes of consciousness through sudden shifts in circumstance. Khamael’s
actions lead to breakthroughs and illumination, sometimes experienced in hindsight rather than at
the time, since the circumstance itself can seem in the moment to be a destructive. For the initiate,
the breakthrough and illumination helps us connect more fully to Chesed and the experience of
expansion.

Guides and Angels: The Seraphim

Seraphim, Fiery Serpents, angels that burn away what is no longer necessary. The Seraphim, Fiery
Serpents, are the Helpers that burn away all parts of our lives that are no longer necessary, including
those parts of our psyche that no longer serve us. We need to be prepared to “face the fire,”
releasing our attachments, if we want to transform through this realm. The Seraphim act to shift our
psyche through our daily circumstances, external events, and internal responses. It’s important to
understand that although the Seraphim are angels of fire, they have also been known, since ancient
times, as angels of love.
The Physical World: Mars
Mars supports transformation through the power of individual action, courage, and determination.
In the world of personal activity in the world, Mars gives us strength of will, the ability to initiate,
and the confidence to stand up for ourselves and others. Mars also gives discipline and limits in
expressing our power, which means it provides the capacity to focus and expend the proper amount
of energy for what is required in the moment.

 To harness the power of Mars in your life, locate the house in which Mars resides in your
natal chart.
 Other Associations for Mars:
o Day of the Week: Tuesday
o Astrological Sign: Leo
o Deities: Mars, Ares, Sekhmet “Fierce Protector,” Ninurta (Babylonian) “Destroyer of
Evil and Divine Strength”
o Musical Note: D
o Crystals: Ruby, Garnet, Red Jasper
o Chakra: Solar Plexus (fire)
o Tarot Card: The Tower (the Great Transformer)
 The transformation that Mars fuels is anchored through a five-step cycle of transformation.
The five steps are: 1. Initiating a new purpose; Learning and exploring; 3. Integration
through practice; mastery; and transformation. This cycle is embedded in every activity in
your life. By identifying the stages of transformation you can maximize your focus and
effort.

Tools
In the physical world we associate the sword as a tool of aggressive action or violence. In the bib-
physical realms, however, the Sword is the tool of the spiritual warrior and the enlightened Mind,
cutting through whatever binds and restricts. Interestingly, Zayin, meaning Sword in Hebrew, is
associated with the 17th Path on the tree which is also home to The Lovers card. On the highest
level, The Lovers represents the polarity of unity and division, and the ultimate journey of return to

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

wholeness. It can be interesting to contemplate the relationship between The Lovers, and the Sword
as a tool of wholeness, at once dividing and protecting in order to return to unity.
The other tools of Geburah are all tools of discipline. Crowley says this: “The Scourge (lash) keeps
the aspiration keen; the Dagger expresses the determination to sacrifice for all; and the Chain
restricts any wandering.”

Expanded Notes
Tiphareth in the Four Worlds
 The Name of God: YHVH Aloah va Daath.
Commonly translated as the “Lord God of Knowledge,” Greer says that a more accurate translation is
“God made manifest in the sphere of the Mind.” This is the longest name on the Tree, a merging of
three different qualities of creative energy. YHVH represents the pure creative force of the Universe, the
most direct and personal aspect of Source. Aloah represents the merging of Divine and Physical form.
This is “God” stepping into the world. Daath is the name for the hidden Sephirah of Knowledge that is
located in the Abyss midway between Kether and Tiphareth.

 Archangel Michael
Known as the “Likeness of God,” Archangel Michael wields the sword of truth and illuminated
understanding. He helps us connect to wholism through the truth of who we are. Call on
Archangel Michael to release limiting beliefs and subconscious programming. He will also help
you set your boundaries and energy field at a high frequency that enables you to be protected
and at the same time fully interface with the world around you.

 Helpers and Guides: The Malachim

The Malachim are the elemental forces of nature that maintain equilibrium throughout nature.
These are the intelligences that keep all forces, from solar systems to atoms, in balanced order.

 Material World: The Sun

As the center of our solar system, the Sun is our emissary of Source, supporting all aspects of life,
wholeness, and light. Throughout our world the Sun distributes this light of unfiltered consciousness. It
illuminate our souls, providing purpose, potential, and the necessary energy and fuel to bring wholeness
to all aspects of life.

The Position on the Tree

Tiphareth is the central balancing point of equilibrium on the Tree. It forms the bridge between
absolute light and the infinite expressions of the density of form. We can understand this through
the perspectives of the Middle Pillar, Polarity of the Paths, and the Upper and Lower Worlds.

The Middle Pillar. The most important aspect of Tiphareth is its location as our connection to
Higher Self at the mid-point between Kether and Malkuth. The Sun, located in Tiphareth, IS our
personal connection to Source (Kether).

Polarity of the Paths. Tiphareth unites all polarites. With the exception of Malkuth, all of the
Sephiroth connect here and Tiphareth balances and unities the polarities of each respective pair of
Sephirah which it joins.

Upper and Lower Worlds. Tiphareth uses the powers of Force and Form to mediate between the
upper and lower realms, connecting the lower four Sephiroth (the Personality) with the upper four
(the Higher Self). To the upper - expansive - four Sephirah Tiphareth offers equilibrating form. To
the lower – denser - four it offers spiritual force.

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Position on the Tree, cont.
Another way to express this is that Tiphareth is the linking point between the four elemental forces
or worlds of Fire descending to Water, to Air, then to Earth. When the worlds are stacked in Jacob’s
Ladder, they are connected through Tiphareth, Tiphareth becomes Kether (the spark of the divine)
on a lower arc, and Yesod (consolidation of the light) on a higher arc.

This also explains why there are three Magical images for Tiphareth. From the point of view of
Kether, Tiphareth is a child; from Yesod it’s a king. As the point of transmutation of Force from
above and below it’s a sacrificed god.

Personal Qualities and Acquisitions

The central truth of the Tree and of the work of Qabalah is found in Tiphareth: There are no other
gods, no other sources of truth, and no other authorities. The truth – and our salvation – lies within.
In Tipareth we connect with our “Higher Self,” also known as our Holy Guardian Angel (H.G.A.).
Our personal “Great Work” begins with our sincere intention to make this connection. Devotion to
the Great Work refers to our contribution in co-creation to the perfection of the unfolding of the
Universe. Our ultimate life purpose IS the Great Work of becoming aligned with this task. Thus the
Great Work of Tipareth is the commitment and inspiration to work intentionally for the evolution
of our soul.

Tiphareth is the realm of all healing. Its location at the center of the tree harmonizes all forms of
manifestation. This is the meeting point of self and Self, the point of incarnation where we learn to
connect with our higher consciousness and manifest health, harmony, success, and abundant well
being. Tiphareth represents the point of light within the center of all Beings, including our Earth.

“Mediating Intelligence” refers to Tipareth as the role of the Mediator, the connector and
harmonizer, of all of the other realms. In Tipareth we encounter the mystery of sacrifice. To
sacrifice to the greater good is NOT martyrdom. Rather, it is a process that releases and breaks up a
dense or static form of energy into higher frequencies that are returned in free circulation to the
cosmos.

True healing is a process of integration and coherence. In Tiphareth we connect with our inner Sun.
It is the solar plexus that strengthens our own strong and shining heart. This is the coherence that
leads to wholeness. Without this connection to inner consciousness we flounder in the chaos of the
non-physical realms. The elementals, when severed from Tiphareth, descend into demonic (chaotic)
states. To heal nature and the natural world we must have access to the solar principle of this realm.

In our personal lives Tiphareth is expressed through all forms of healing and the path of emotional
balance. Tipareth helps us learn to listen within, maintain equilibrium, and walk the tightrope of
physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance.

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Virtue and Vice: Devotion to the Great Work vs. Pride
Acquisition in the Microcosm: Imagination
The inner quality that develops through this realm is our ability to see higher truth through the
organ of imagination. This quality of vision and sight, in alignment with solar illumination of
commitment to purpose is what allows us to fully commit to our highest path. This is the Great
Work of our soul’s calling.

The challenge in this sphere is to hold compassion for others rather than pride. When we are able to
fully stay present we embody compassion, seeing the truth of wholeness and taking full
responsibility for our connection and participation, rather than stepping into illusions of superiority
and judgment of others choices and paths. One of the tools for Compassion is found in Path 17,
Zayin, The Lovers and the Sword, that connects Tiphareth with Binah.

On our life path of return to wholeness it’s the frequency of the Sun in Tiphareth that enables us to fully
reconnect with our Higher Self and unity consciousness. The Sun connects you personally with the awareness
of who you truly are, and the connection with your life purpose and your Great Work.

Magical Images: Trinity of the Divine Child – (the site of incarnation), the Sacrificed God
(Mediator between self and Self); and resurrected King (the connection with Kether and the Sun).
The union of the three is expressed throughout the world’s spiritual traditions. In Christianity the
mysteries of Tipareth are embodied in the life of the Christ.

Tools:
The Lamen. A magical pendant, the Lamen protects the heart and solar plexus. It holds a symbol
that represents your higher purpose.
The Rosy Cross holds the energy of SIX and is encoded with glyphsm geometric shapes and colors
that create a holograph of the Universe. The Calvary Cross refers to the unfurled cube and the
Mystery of the Resurrection, which is one of the aspects of Tiphareth. The Truncated Pyramid

Associated Tarot Cards - The SIXES and the Princes

The Four SIXES
The success of Tiphareth is achieved through effort and will that is applied within each of the
realms. Each of the four Sixes indicates an experience of harmony and perfected realization within
its respective realm.

 6 of Wands, Victory, Jupiter in Leo, “Lord of Victory.”

 6 of Cups, Pleasure, Sun in Scorpio, “Lord of Joy.”
 6 of Swords, Science, Mercury in Aquarius, “Lord of Earned Success.”
 6 of Discs, Success, Moon in Taurus, “Lord of Material Success.”

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Tarot, cont. The Four Princes
The Princes represent the warrior aspect of our being. The Prince of Swords is the full expression of
our illuminated awareness in Tiphareth, representing the right use of sword to unite Heart and Solar
Plexus. On Tree of Life, the Knight and Queen (Fire and Water, Force and Form, Love and Will)
give birth to the Prince, the Son/Sun – who is US. This is also the encoded mystery of the Christ,
who exists within us, not without.

 Ruled by: Venus in Libra
 Hebrew letter Lamed, meaning “ox-goad.”

Second Primary Path: 19- Path of the Higher Self

The 19th path – Lust and Teth (Snake) – is the horizontal path that resides ABOVE Tiphareth. It
connects Geburah and Chesed and intersects the vertical column of alignment that is activated by
Tiphareth. It is here, on the highest path below the Abyss, where we fully engage with Tiphareth and
the mystery of incarnation.

Tarot Valour, Debauch, Futility Plant Acacia, Bay, Laurel, Vine
Failure Fragrance Rose, Red Sandalwood
The Affirmation:
“Living from that Will, supported by its unfailing Wisdom and Understanding, mine is
the Victorious Life.”
Location on the Tree: Residing at the base of the pillar of Force, Netzach provides the will to live
and the drive to succeed in the world. Victory (perseverance) in this realm means that we are able to
balance and integrate our feelings instead of being carried away or lost by emotion. The challenge in
Netzach is learning to guide the flow of our emotional energy. This requires spiritual commitment of
the will (Seven of Wands). It takes effort and courage to “thrust” forward in life, despite challenges
and uncertainty, and apply the necessary will power and focus to direct the flow of energy thru our
inner guidance.
Key Words for Netzach: Vision, Courage, Perseverance, Mysticism, Beauty, Creativity and the
Urge to Create, Occult (Hidden) Intelligence, Endurance, Unifying Force.
Experience: Netzach is the realm of the strong and healthy heart. In many ways this is the most
important Sephirah on the tree of Life, especially in a world that has denied the power of the
emotions for so long. The alternate title, “Gate of the Mysteries” expresses this significance.

Netzach is the experience of Victory through the power of love, pure emotion, and our instincts. It
is “force,” rather than form. In the tradition of Hebraic Kabbalah, this sphere is associated with
Moses, who throughout his lifetime persevered through many trials and obstacles in order to be of
service to a larger good, while in relationship with others. The power of the rod of Moses, which he
used to part the Red Sea, is found in the Seven of Wands, Valour.
In Netzach we begin to understand the meaning of relationships through this quality of expanding
beyond ourselves. We anchor in our values and extract meaning from our experiences. The qualities
of Victory and Enduring refer to success in reaching out, in taking the next step, crossing the
boundaries from self to other. The victory is of Love. What is enduring is Love.
Spiritual Experience: “The Vision of Beauty Triumphant” The experience of perfection in
physical form.
Magical Image: A beautiful naked woman. The archetype of Venus/Aphrodite.

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Expanded Notes
Netzach in the Four Worlds
 The Name of God: YHVH Tzabaoth.
 Archangel Haniel: Known as the “Grace of God.”
 Helpers and Guides: The Elohim, The “Gods and Goddesses.”
 Material World: Venus is the seat of emotional intelligence. As the third body in our solar system,
Venus expands the polarity of Mercury through the congruence of the heart. Venus activates our
emotional perceptions through the signature of Beauty and universal harmony. It’s this signature of
Beauty as truth that enables us to resonate and come into authentic relationship with all parts of life.

The Relationship of Netzach and Hod

Netzach and Hod form one of three horizontal pairings on the Tree, and Netzach is best
understood through its complementary relationship with Hod. Neither realm can be fully
experienced or fulfilled without the other.
Hod Netzach
Truth Beauty
Intellect Feelings & Instincts
Form Force
Caduceus Rose
Thoth Hathor
Individual Mind Group Mind
Empathic Awareness Emotional Connection
Thoughts, Words, Concepts Dance, Sound, Color

Personal Qualities and Acquisitions

Acquisition in the Microcosm: Emotional Strength (Valour)
The inner quality that develops in Netzach is the ability to strengthen our emotions through the
power of the will. It’s this connection to will and emotions that enables us to align with inner truth
in the face of challenge, adversity, and uncertainty.
Power and Love. The Victory of Netzach is realized through the union of power and love.
Netzach binds together and makes congruent all that Tiphareth activates through solar illumination,
and all that Hod realizes through the power of the mind. The significance of this union of power
and love is expressed through the two power beings of Hathor and Moses who are both associated
with Netzach.
Hathor is the Egyptian deity associated with music, dance, and all forms of sensuality. She is also an
archetypal connection to the Hathors, who are an ascended civilization present on Earth for
millennia to help us heal through the power of the heart. In Hebraic Kabbalah Netzach is associated
with Moses, who throughout his lifetime persevered through many trials and obstacles in order to
be of service to a larger good while in relationship with others. The image of Moses parting the Red
Sea is a powerful archetype of what is possible when the authority of the will is aligned with the
heart. This is the central message of the Seven of Wands, Valour. Everything is possible when we
harness the infinite power of our will within our heart.

Tools: The Rose: transcendent Beauty combining scent, color, and shape; The Lamp: the nourished
light of Love; The Girdle: protection and commitment to Service.

Associated Tarot Cards: The SEVENS

The forces of Netzach are inherently unstable, as illustrated by the three Bardo cards. This is
because the Venusian force is difficult to harness unless it’s anchored through the power of the will,
expressed through the Seven of Wands. Our emotions can be destructive unless they are firmly
anchored in love.
 7 of Wands, Valour, Mars in Leo, “Lord of Valour.”
 7 of Cups, Debauch, Venus in Scorpio, “Lord of Illusionary Success.”

Location on the Tree

At the base of the Pillar of Severity, Hod is the realm of solar consciousness and the concrete mind.
This is the world of ideas, learning, knowledge, language, symbolic archetype, and communication.
Hod holds the capacity to see behind the immediate form to what lies beyond. As such this is the
first realm on the Path of Return where the initiate connects with awareness of the divine.
Key Words for Hod
Higher Truth, Reason, Intellect, Thought, Mind, Magic & Science, Language, Communication,
Conceptual Symbolism, Healing, “The Absolute (Perfect) Intelligence.”

Experience
Hod is the realm of the mind, the first place where we have the opportunity to experience reality
beyond our physical senses. Hermetic Law says: “All is Mind,” In Hod we learn to connect with
higher mind, through intellectual structures of coherence, order, and unity. This is the site of mental
illumination and the eagerness of discovery. By learning, perceiving symbolic language, and bringing
order to the mind and emotions, we are able to move beyond concrete form and touch the larger
universe. Because of this connection to Mind and Universal Law, our wisdom teacher Thoth
(Hermes) is associated with Hod.
The virtue of Hod is truth. The light of the divine is bright enough in this sphere to illuminate the
truth of things, revealing previously hidden elements of illusion, deception and falsehood. When we
step into alignment with truth, we become a channel for the unseen forces of coherence that bring
order and integration to our perceptions. Hod is the realm of Mercury, the Magician in Tarot. Here
we learn to use our will and the power of the word in order to imprint in the astral realm and
manifest in the physical world. (In Yesod we experience Magic; in Hod we become the Magician.)
In relationships, Hod represents our capacity for empathy, creating space to listen and communicate
with clarity. While in Netzach we connect, in Hod we step back in order to learn and understand.
Hod evokes the capacity for surrender, authentic presence, and adjustment to the greater good.

including farming and handwork.

The Relationship of Netzach and Hod

Netzach and Hod form one of three horizontal pairings on the Tree, and Netzach is best
understood through its complementary relationship with Hod. Neither realm can be fully

Tools of the Magician

 Names and Versicles. It is the energy of sound that activates the templates that give birth
to physical form. Traditional names of God and Mantras (versicles) hold encoded
frequencies of sound based on the energies of number and archetype. When spoken with
intention and feeling (the powers of Netzach), the spoken word invokes all of the Power of
the Universe. As Wang says in his essay on Hod, “Words of Power are the greatest of
human instruments.” (p104)

 The Apron. The traditional tool of the craftsman and of Solomon the Wise, the apron is a
symbol of approaching our daily “Work” as a craft and a spiritual practice. This tool
symbolizes our ability to experience all intentional activity in the world as an opportunity for
magical creation.
 Plants: Moly was a mythical herb of protection given to Odysseus by Hermes. Anhalonium
lewinii is the botanical name for Peyote, a reference to medicinal plants that support journeys. This is
a case when it’s helpful for many people to explore other plants that they can use to support Hod.

Tarot 9’s Strength, Happiness, Cruelty,

The Affirmation:
“In thought and word and deed I rest my life from day to day upon the sure Foundation
of Eternal Being.”
Location on the Tree
Yesod is near the base of the middle pillar. It forms the apex of the lower triangle beneath Hod and
Netzach. This is the triad of the personality in our daily life in which we use our mind and emotions
to interface with the physical world of Malkuth. Yesod that receives all of the energies from the
upper Sephirah. It is connected to Tiphareth above and Malkuth below.

Key Words for Yesod

Dedication, purpose, commitment, confidence, independence, mental and emotional balance,
intuition, dream work, connection to natural rhythms. The Lunar cycle. Ability to understand and
navigate the power of the astral world. The commitment to showing up to connection to life
through all forms of relationship. (Rabbi Wolf: “The Bond.”)

Overview
Yesod, “Foundation,” integrates the mental and emotional bodies (Hod and Netzach), as well as all
of the preceding Sephiroth. This is the world that immediately precedes all physical form, the bridge
between physical and non-physical reality.. All of the energies of the previous Sephiroth swirl and
funnel through this realm before they can materialize. This is the secret to the power of Yesod.
The term “Foundation” refers to Yesod as the resting place for all of the upper Sephiroth. It is the
home of the Astral and etheric realms. Every aspect of all of the upper realms must pass through
Yesod before coming into physical form. Ted Andrews says, “This is the level in which our mind
can build the images that connect us to all others in our life.”
Yesod is also the realm of the Moon, which governs all rhythms and cycles of growth as well as
intuition and intuitive understandings. This seeming paradox of firm Foundation and watery Moon
holds the key to the power of Yesod. Crowley refers to this as the necessary balance of “Stability”
and “Change,” and the fact that neither can exist without the other. In his words, “Change IS
stability.” This is the paradox and power of Yesod.

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

Kundalini energy resides in Yesod. The motion of “undulation” of the snake describes the
connection of Kundalini to Astral Light, the weaving and winding of energies governed by the
rhythms of the Moon. This is the way we move up the tree, using kundalini intelligence and chi.

In the realm of relationships, Yesod is the power of connection, the capacity and will to build
bridges, make contacts, and relate to others. It is the quality of intentional love, reaching out to
connect with another, as well as the connection to a mate and sexual connection. “The essence of
Yesod is our ability to focus on the person with whom we are communicating (connecting). It is the
funnel through which all the Sephiroth of mind and emotion pour into a relationship. Yesod
denotes the intensity, bonding and strength of communication that exists between people.” Rabbi
Laibl Wolf.
Expanded Notes for Hod

Spiritual Experience: “The Vision of the Machinery of the Universe.” Understanding and seeing
the natural order of Creation, both the physical and non-physical worlds, and experiencing one’s
part to play in the whole. The image of machinery helps us understand Yesod as the bridge between
physical and non-physical, the “engine room” of the Tree. (Fortune) As we connect with the
spiritual aspects of Yesod, we begin to experience and understand the ways in which everything in
the Universe is connected.

Yesod can’t be experienced in isolation. Because this is an astral image (The Moon), it requires a
connection above in order to have the context for the information. This is the connection to
Tiphareth (Sun) or Hod (Knowledge) through the path of the Sun (Resh). Thoth rules both Hod
and the Moon (Yesod).

Magical Image: A Beautiful Naked Man, Very Strong

Yesod in the Four Worlds

Atzilut Archetypal Shaddai El Chai. “The Almighty and Ever Living Divine;” The Almighty
Strength of Life, Pantheism, the life force that resides in all form.
Briah Creative Archangel Gabriel. Known as The Messenger, Angel of Truth, Hero and
Strength of God.
Yetzirah Formative Cherubim. The Strong, Keepers of the Celestial (Akashic) Records
Asiyah Material Luna, the Moon. The Moon regulates all cycles, connects us with our
intuition, and helps us integrate the body-mind-emotion connection.
Virtue: Independence – Assuming our independence and allowing that of others.
Vice: Idleness – Laziness, resting on what has already been accomplished. Use discrimination of
Malkuth to reassert purpose on path.

Tools of Yesod: Sandals, Perfume, Altar

Sandals here refer to ceremonial footwear, flexible and simple, that supports the ability to be present
in the temple or site of ceremony. (Interesting to consider house shoes in this context (the inner
temple as opposed to outdoor shoes, more like tools for the warrior)
Perfume is a ceremonial tool that connects us deeply to inner body – a way to bridge worlds by
activating the deep brain and our instincts. Intentional use of essential oils is a powerful power tool.
The Altar is a physical creation that uses symbols (the astral) to connect with non-physical worlds.

encouragement. God’s Messenger and the Angel of Truth, it was Gabriel who came to Mary to tell
her of the birth of the Child. He (She?) supports us and offers hope as we walk our path. In the four
Elements associated with Water and the West – the strength of inner power and Love of the Great
Mother. Gabriel supports all forms of creative expression and communication, writers, artists,
parents and children. Gabriel helps us connect to our inner strength and release fear and
procrastination so we can move forward on our path.

Virtue Discrimination / Intention Fragrance Dittany of Crete
Vice Lethargy/Avarice Symbols Equal-armed Cross
Body Root Chakra The Magic Circle

The Four Princesses The Four Tens

Affirmation: “The Kingdom of Spirit is embodied in my flesh.”

Overview
Malkuth is the realm of the physical world. As the lowest Sephirah on the Tree of Life, Malkuth
receives all of the focused forces and energies of Light and the Divine Mind from all of the non-
physical realms. As the realm into which we have incarnated, Malkuth is our playground. It holds
the physical expression of every aspect of consciousness that exists throughout the Universe.

Malkuth is called “Kingdom” referring to the physical world as well as humanity itself. We interface
with Malkuth through our five senses. Working with Malkuth we learn to recognize the divinity and
Light that resides within all aspects of the physical realm. This includes the elemental (unseen) forces
within the Earth and the Devic beings of Nature.

Malkuth is called “the most complex Sephirah” because in order for Spirit to come into form, the
entire tree must funnel through Malkuth. This is why it’s known as “The Gateway.”

The virtue of Discrimination refers to the ability to navigate density and to master the bridge
between the physical and non-physical worlds.

One of the keys to Malkuth lies in the paradox of stability. It is the stability of embodiment that
makes all the other worlds possible. It is also the challenge. As Fortune said, “It is in the inertia of
Malkuth that its virtue lies.” In other words, although inertia is called the “vice” of Malkuth, it is also
what makes the virtue of discrimination possible. This principle of polarity between inertia and
discrimination is a key to embodiment and can also help us understand the nature of shadow as a
necessary aspect of light.

The colors of Malkuth reflect the descent of light to matter. Each is a darkened or muted form of
the four Sephiroth above as follows: The Yellow of Tipareth gives Citrine, Orange of Hod gives
Russet, Green of Netzach gives Olive, and Purple of Yesod gives Black. These colors show how the
higher self of Tipareth chooses to incarnate through Netzach, Hod, and Yesod.
Personal Qualities

Elizabeth Schermer The Alchemy Mystery School April 2017

 Grounding and stability.
 Safety, security, physical health.
 Discernment.
 Ability to make decisions and take concrete action in alignment with will.
 Release of fear and inertia.
 Connection and interaction with all physical form.
 Orientation to space with the four directions and four elements, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

The secret to the Light of Malkuth lies in the maxim “As above, so below.” In this sense, Kether,
the crown, and Malkuth, the root, are the same. Indeed, as the worlds interface through multiple
dimensions, the Malkuth (root) of one world becomes the Kether (crown) for the world below.
The traditional title of “Resplendent Intelligence” refers to this realization of the “Lights” that lies
within the physical world. This relates to the spiritual experience of Malkuth, which happens by
connecting with the Light of one’s expanded self, “The Holy Guardian Angel.”
The Spiritual Technology of Physical Tools and Practices
Malkuth holds the keys to the rest of the Tree of Life. It is in Malkuth that we learn to celebrate our
light and the gift of embodiment in the physical world.

In order to fully embody, all personal and spiritual growth MUST have a physical component.
This fundamental truth must be understood and practiced. If we want to move either direction in
our life, bring spirit into the world, or move from the world to the realm of spirit, then we must
learn to work intentionally with substance and matter.

Physical substances are the containers for light in our world. In order to be part of our world, non-
physical substance and experience in the upper realms (light, sound, consciousness) must be
anchored into physical form.

When we engage intentionally with the physical world, we infuse consciousness into physical matter.
This is why every Sephiroth on the Tree of Life is anchored in physical substances and symbols. The
physical symbols, practices and sounds are the ways that we embody the qualities and frequencies of
each of the worlds.

Because the symbols and tools associated with the Tree of Life have been used for thousands of
years, there is an established psychic connection that links the physical substance to the nonphysical
spirit. We can connect the two by intention and by using our imagination. Our tools and talismans
build in strength over time, especially when formed from proper materials. They become “storage
batteries” for our work. This practice of connecting Spirit to physical matter enables us to bridge
the physical.

Finally, a note on grounding. In order to fully integrate spiritual growth, it’s important that all
personal practices begin and end in Malkuth. In other words, always ground before AND after any
spiritual or energetic activity. Ground before to prepare and ground afterward to integrate.
Otherwise work in non-physical realms can result in psychic or physical disturbance. Being
ungrounded creates instability and makes one vulnerable to interference by opportunistic energies.
