O Korea: The Chuseok Harvest festival of Korea is celebrated on September 21st of each year to honor the family

V ancestors and to thank the Gods for a plentiful harvest. Most people return to their ancestors’ hometown to hold
memorials and receive blessing from their ancestors. They have a feast with a special dish made of sweet stuffed

E rice cakes shaped as a half moon. People wear traditional clothes and the women dance in a large circle under the
M
moon called ganggangsullae. Others engage in activities such as music competitions and singing folk music.

Ghana: The Homowo festival is celebrated annually in May. It is also known as the Yam festival. During this festival, B
B people thank their ancestors for their resilience, survival through famine and hunger during the difficult harvest years.
After the yams ripen and the harvest is complete, the yams are blessed and cooked. They are either added to soups or stews E
E or put in flour and fried. Everyone in the community then shares in a big feast after which they sing folks songs and dance
together.

Germany: The Erntedank festival is celebrated anually on the first Sunday of October. The festival is a religious
holiday. There are religious services and large parades put together by the churches. The festivities include music
and dancing. People feast and share dishes such as Mohnstriezel (a sweet bread made with nuts and raisins). It’s
also a day of appreciation and gratitude for the harvest and all the good that life offers.
India: The Pongal festival is celebrated in South India. It is celebrated in the months of January
and February after the rice, sugarcane, and turmeric harvest. It lasts for four days. Pongal is a time
of giving thanks to the Gods for their help the with the crops, and for the natural resources that help N
N the crops grow. During the festival people make a sweet rice dish in clay pots and share it with
visiting family and friends. People discard their old belongings and burn them in a big fire. Houses O
O are painted and the homes are decorated with festive hand drawn patterns made from powdered rice
flour.

E Japan: The Kinrōkanshahi is celebrated on November 23rd of each year. It started as a harvest festival
but then changed overtime to become the Labor Thanksgiving Day. Workers across Japan are celebrated

M on this day and thanked for doing a good job. Children give gifts to public service workers. People have
meals with fish, rice, and tea. They enjoy different family activities like going to parks, etc.

E Malaysia: The Kadazan festival is celebrated on May 1st of each year and people enjoy a R
R two day holiday. Prayer rituals are offered giving thanks to the spirits of the rice plants
and their source. After the rituals, traditional songs and dances are performed. People
feast on cooked chicken, poultry and meats. Everyone enjoys cultural exhibitions, races,
and other games during the festival.
