How to Make a Jack-O'-Lantern

Dad: Okay, let's begin.
Jenny: What do we do first?
Dad: First, take this bread knife, and carefully cut out a lid on the top of the pumpkin.
Jenny: Like this?
Dad: Yes, good.
Jenny: Now what?
Dad: Now we scoop out the insides with the spoon.
Jenny: Can I use my hands?
Dad: Ha, ha. Sure, if you like.
Jenny: Are we going to throw the insides away?
Dad: No. That would be wasteful. We'll give the pumpkin meat to Mom. She can use it
to make pumpkin pie later!
Jenny: Now what?
Dad: Now, draw a scary face on the pumpkin with this pen. Next, we cut out the face
with the knife. This can be tricky, so I'll do this part.
Jenny: Now we just have to put in the candle, right?
Dad: That's right. And there you have it—a scary jack-o'-lantern!

Year festival. It always happens in April, and it's always a lot of fun. Everyone knows
about this festival because you can throw water on other people! This brings good
luck for the next year. You can buy delicious food on the street, like papaya or chicken
with special sauce.

Many people go back to their hometowns during Songkran. They want to spend
time with their families. On the first day, they clean their houses. On the second day,

Spiders in Cambodia 本文選自佳音翰林九上第四課 Reading

Spiders are not liked by many people. People especially don't feel comfortable
near large ones. It's hard not to notice them because their bodies are covered with
thick hair. But in Cambodia, they are treated very differently. Now let's take a look at
the story of Sokha and the spiders.

Sokha is a young boy from Cambodia. He isn't very tall. He's small for his age
because he doesn't get enough meat to eat. His family raises geese, but they will only
be served as food on special days. So, what does Sokha do when he wants to have
some meat? He hunts for big spiders.

To hunt for a spider, Sokha has to look for a spider's hiding hole first. When he
finds a spider in a hole, he digs hard to make it come out. Sokha needs to be very
careful because a spider bite hurts a lot. One time, he was bitten on the toe by a really
large spider — it was almost 15 centimeters long.

Sometimes Sokha is lucky and can collect more than ten spiders for his family in
a day. After he brings them home, the spiders may be barbecued and then eaten with
rice. For Sokha and his family, spiders aren't something scary. They are delicious food.

在台灣的經驗(翰林九上 U6)

My Experience in Taiwan 本文選自佳音翰林九上第六課 Reading

I'm Dylan Evans from the UK. Sixteen years ago, I got the chance to work in
Taiwan for five months. Sixteen years have passed. I'm still here because I've fallen in
love with this land.

I remember my first day in Taiwan. The sun was shining, the birds were singing,
but I felt so lost. I didn't know whether it was a good idea to work in a different
country or not. At the airport, I was trying to catch the bus to Taichung, but all of the
signs were in Chinese. I walked to a row of shops and asked the people there for help.
No one understood me. I felt helpless at that moment. Finally, after an hour, an old
man showed me where to catch the bus. What a first day!

A few weeks later, I still didn't have any friends here. I thought it would be easy to
meet people, but I was wrong. I was so lonely that I thought about going home. One
day, however, three teenagers came up to me at a store. After some small talk, they
asked if they could take a picture with me. I said, "Sure!" I made my first Taiwanese
friends that day. It was the turning point of my life in Taiwan. What an experience!

After several years, I got to know this land and its people more. Taiwanese people
are friendly and polite; they are just too shy to speak to foreigners. Over the years, I've
learned how warm-hearted they can be. I've made the right decision. Taiwan is now
my home.

Food Firsts 本文選自文鶴出版 Reading Challenge1 2nd

How much do you know about the history of some of your favorite foods? Do you
know when people in England started cooking curry dishes? Do you know in which
country pizzas or hamburgers were first made? The facts might surprise you.

Many people think the English found out about curry from people in India in the
1600s. In reality, wealthy English people were eating dishes made with curry spices
hundreds of years before British ships traveled to India. Cooks of wealthy English
families during the time of King Richard I were making curry dishes, and in fact, the
word“curry”can be found in an English language cookbook as far back as 1377.

As for pizza, this dish was probably first made in Persia (what is now Iran). The
Persians were eating round, flat bread with cheese in the 500s. That was nearly 1,000
years before pizza caught on in Naples, Italy!

Finally, let's look at the truth behind hamburgers. Many people think hamburgers
are an American food. However, according to some stories, hamburgers came from
Hamburg, Germany. A German named Otto Kuasw created the first hamburger in
1891. Four years later, German sailors introduced hamburgers to Americans.

Where foods come from isn't nearly as important as how they taste; as long as
they are delicious! So, go get some of your favorite food and dig in.

Borrowed Words 本文選自文鶴出版 Reading Challenge1 2nd

Do you often use shampoo or put ketchup on your food? Have you ever visited
a sauna? If you think these words are originally English, you'd better think again. In
fact, each of these words comes from a different language! Shampoo, for example,
is actually a word from the Hindi language in India. This word originally meant
“massage.”In hair shops in India, barbers massage your head while washing your
hair. Over time, British people in India used this word to mean a liquid that cleans hair.

  Almost everyone knows

what ketchup is. People all
over the world like to pour
this tomato sauce on French
fries or sandwiches. This
word is originally Chinese
(from ketsiap, a fish sauce). In
the 1600 s, British and Dutch
sailors brought this fish sauce
to Europe. Over time, people
changed the sauce by adding
tomato flavor to it, but the
name basically stayed the
same.

Sauna, a popular type of public steam room and shower facility, comes from the
Finnish language. During one of the European Olympics, athletes from Britain and
Germany saw Finnish athletes use saunas after training. Later, the general public all
over Europe started using this style of bathing, too. Now, we still use this word to
describe all kinds of steam rooms.

English is full of many wonderful borrowed words from many languages. Perhaps
English should change its name to Eng-hin-chi-fin-fre-ger-ital-span-ish!

Growing Deserts 本文選自文鶴出版 Reading Challenge1 2nd

There are deserts all over the world. They can be found in Africa, China, South
America, and North America. In some places, deserts are growing. This is a serious
problem because deserts destroy farmland and ruin land where animals live. When
people cannot grow food or find animals to eat, they have to leave their homes.

Sometimes, nature can cause deserts to spread. Wind can move sand away
from deserts and onto useful land. When there is no rain for a long time, plants die
and deserts grow. However, humans can also cause deserts to grow. This is called
desertification, and it happens in many ways. One way is when people cause too
much air pollution, which can make an area hotter. Hotter weather can reduce the
amount of rain as well. Too many people in one area can also damage the land. In
addition, having many animals can harm the land. When large animals like cows walk
on soil too much, they turn it into dust. The wind easily blows this dust away. Trees
help hold water in the ground. When people cut down too many trees, less water
stays in the ground, and the soil is ruined.

All of these things can speed up desertification. To stop deserts from growing,
people must think of ways to treat the land better.

日本 JR 電車為提早發車道歉

A Japanese Rail Company Apologizes for Early

Running Train
In some nations, you might get a railway company apology for a late train or bus.
However, the West Japan Railway (JR West) has made global headlines after a train left
around half minute earlier than the schedule.

On an early Friday morning, one of the JR West trains wrongly left Notogawa
Station at 07 : 11 : 35 instead of 07 : 12 : 00 . The train driver knew he made a mistake
after closing the door to the passenger train. As the driver did not see any waiting
passengers on the platform, he decided to leave earlier. The train remained on
schedule for the rest of the day.

Although a few seconds earlier may not seem to be a big trouble, it turned out
that there were still some passengers wishing to get on board for work or school. JR
West later issued a humble apology for its“inexcusable”mistake after receiving
several complaints.

This is not the first apology for being early. The incident shows the extremes
to be on time in Japanese culture. Millions of Japanese travelers rely on the railway
system every day, and people expect the passenger trains to be punctual.

Giant Iceberg Grounded Near the Coast of

Newfoundland Town
O ver the Easter weekend, a giant iceberg was found near the coast of
Newfoundland town. Photographers and tourists have started gathering to the town
taking photos of the first iceberg of the season and uploading them to social media.
Ferryland, a town of 500 citizens in Canada, has become a hot tourist attraction.

Each spring, the current brings arctic ice southward along the Newfoundland
coast; the area is also known as "iceberg alley." It is common to see large number of
ice blocks floating in the area. However, this iceberg seems like it has parked and
could last until late spring or early summer. The iceberg is quite huge and close up to
the coast line as it overshadowed people, boats, and even houses in town. According
to the Canadian Ice Service, the size of iceberg is between 151 – 240 feet high and
401–670 feet long.

It has been a busy season in iceberg alley as hundreds of icebergs were reported
in the Atlantic. Experts believe the increase of icebergs might be due to the effects of
global warming, which led to shifting winds and ocean currents.

Eating Fries Linked to Higher Risk of Death

A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found
that people who eat fries two times a week will have a higher risk of death. The study
looked into potato consumption of 4 , 440 people aged 45 – 79 for eight years. The
researchers used questionnaires to collect information about each person's eating
habits. During the course of study, 236 people passed away.

The researchers found that people who eat fried potatoes, including French fries,
potato chips, and hash browns, at least two times per week were linked to a more
than doubled risk of death compared with unfried potato eaters. Fried potatoes are
high in trans fats and salt, which are also linked to heart diseases and obesity.

However, there were some limitations in the study. More research with a larger
group of people is needed to show overeating fries caused a higher risk of death. The
study subjects were not general people as the data were taken from an osteoarthritis
study. The study suggested that eating fried potatoes could be an important factor for
early death and people should limit the intake of fried potatoes.
