Tuning Protocol

My classroom is a computer lab in the High School building located at Luverne

High School in the Luverne Public School District. I am teaching two sections of

Personal Finance to high school students as a business elective. There are twenty-four

students in one class and thirteen in the other section. The students enrolled this

semester are in grades 10-12. Both classes are split approximately 60% male and 40%

female. Within the two sections three of my students have IEPs Overall Luverne Public

Schools demographic breakdown of the student population is 87% white, 6% Hispanic,

2% black, 1% Asian, 1% American Indian, and the remaining 3% of students identify as

2 or more races. Last year there were approximately 28% of the students on free or

reduced lunch, 16% enrolled in special education and 2.4% considered to be English

learners.

Luverne High School is located in Luverne, MN which is a rural agricultural

community of approximately 4500 people. The community values the arts and education

and this is evidenced strongly through the support of the school district. The Middle

School and High School are currently being remodeled due to the passing of the most

recent referendum in the amount of $31 million. The upgrades to the school also include

a fine art performing Center. Since 1983 the school has benefited from a non-profit

organization called Dollars for Scholars. This program has grown to include almost 250

perpetual scholarships that are awarded to qualifying LHS graduates. The last

graduating class was awarded a total of $438,750. The district graduates on average

95% of each Senior class.
