ELEMENTARY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER PROGRAM

Teacher Candidate: Date:

Cooperating Teacher: Taylor Molettiere Coop. Initials

Group Size: 20 Allotted Time 30 minutes Grade Level 3rd grade

Subject or Topic: Germination of a seed Section

STANDARD: (PA/Common Core):

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes)

• Students will learn the germination process of a seed

• Students will be able to create a representation of the germination process of a seed

• Students will be able to describe the germination process In the correct sequential order

II. Assessment/Evaluation plan

A. Formative

Assessment: Documentation Tool: Scale:

(e.g. product, quick (e.g. rating scale, (performance levels)
response, interview) rubric, checklist,
anecdotal notes)

Students will record Anecdotal notes Check, plus, minus

what they have learned
in a science journal Check: Student has
a pretty good
Students will complete Rating scale understanding of
a diagram of the what is being taught
germination process in
order Plus: Student has a
great understands
Students will make Anecdotal notes and comprehends
predictions of what what is being taught
their seed will look like
at the end of the unit
Minus: Student does
Students will write a Anecdotal notes not have a clear
reflection of what they understanding of
learned about what is being taught
germination as an exit
ticket

B. Summative
None

III. Instructional Materials (includes amount)

• Germinated seed

• Mason jars

• Seeds

• wet paper towels

• germination worksheet

IV. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, new content)
A. Prerequisite Skills

• Understand how plants grow

• Know the process of a plant life

B. Key Vocabulary

• Germination

• Flower

• photosynthesis

• root

• seed

C. New Content

• Observe how germination works

• Describe germination

• Understand the steps of germination process

V. Implementation

A. Introduction –
1. Welcome the class by reminding them that we are all scientists! During todays activity we will be
learning the germination process of the plant life cycle

2. Can anyone raise their hand and tell me what the germination process Is? *Call on students who
raise their hand*

3. Good! the germination process of a plant Is when the seed sprouts Its first root Into the ground so
that It cans tart absorbing water

4. Review with the class that a seed Is an embryotic plant that has a protective covering around It
because It has not been fully developed yet and a root Is the part of the plant that grows
underground absorbing all of the water and minerals It Is provided

5. After going over the process of germination you will play this brain pop video to give the students
a better understanding.

6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE6xptjgNR0

7. During the video have the students give a thumbs up when they hear vocab words such as root,
seed, and germination to ensure they are paying attention

8. After the video you will have the students complete a work page that has them cut out different
stages of the germination process and them glue them In order. This will be added to the students
science journal that they are keeping for this lesson

B. Development –

1. You will then Introduce a germinating your own seed activity to the class by showing them a seed
you have germinated ahead of time that Is In a mason jar which makes It easy to look at.

2. While the students are looking at the jar point out how the stems have sprouted from the seed and
started to grow throughout the jar looking for nutrients such as water and minerals.

3. Explain to the students that they will be recreating the mason jar that was just demonstrated and
will be looking back on the jar at the end of this unit to see how their seeds have germinated.

4. You will hand out a mason jars to each of the students along with damp paper towels. you will be
modeling each step for the students as they follow along

5. You then Instruct the students to put the damp paper towels into the jar loosely

6. You then will hand out seeds of your choice to the class making sure every student has five

7. Demonstrate putting the seeds towards the bottom of the jar to Insure they are getting enough
moisture.

8. Then have each student one by one bring their jar up to you where you will carefully place the by
the window sill ensuring each jar Is In the sunlight

9. Once this step Is complete you will have the students draw prediction in their science journal of
what they think their jar will look like In a few days when they check on their seeds. The students
will then be able to compare their predictions with the results

C. Closure –
1. At the end of this lesson review all of the new Information that has been taught and have students
raise their hand and explain the germination process and why It Is Important In the plant life cycle.

2. Have students record their responses under their germination predictions in their science journal as
an exit ticket

D. Accommodations / Differentiation -
1. Have written Instructions on the student’s desk to follow

2. Have a step-by-step chart for the activity drawn out on the board for students to follow

3. Offer hand over hand help as well as repeating steps during the demonstration for students that
may need the repetition

VI. Reflective Response

A. Report of Students’ Performance in Terms of States Objectives (Reflection on students’

performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for students who failed to meet acceptable
level of achievement)

B. Personal Reflection(Question written before lesson is taught.)(Reflective answers to

questions recorded after lesson is taught.)
