EFFECTS OF YOUTUBE-BASED VIDEOS AS INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS TO

THE PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED GRADE 6 PUPIL IN ARALING PANLIPUNAN

OF STA. CRUZ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

One of the prime thrust of social studies in the primary education settings is to develop

holistic and responsible citizens of a nation who can bring social change and

development. The main goal of this subject is to develop students who are analytical,

creative, responsible, productive, and nationalistic and cares for the environment and

humanity (Saguid, 2016).

Araling Panlipunan contributes to the development of a holistically developed citizen who

is aware of the knowledgeable of and critically analyzes current social issues and

concerns in the local and global level (Llanos, 2017).

Hark del Rosario in his book Principles of Teaching 2 emphasizes that effective teaching

of Araling Panlipunan is characterized with Meaningful Integrative Value, that is, it is

meaningful when students see the relevance and connection of their lesson to their lives

because it has real-world application. He adds that it further integrates effective use of

technology, communication and reading/writing skills that add important dimensions to

students’ learning.

It is very evident in today’s setting that teaching and learning has become more accessible

through the use of technology. It is a must for teachers in the 21 st century to use modern

technology in the classroom. Exposure to ICT (Information and Communication


Technology) leads the teacher to achieve pedagogical knowledge to be imparted to all

the learners. Nowadays, ICT-based teacher can easily improve the quality education for

it really enhance the learning development of every learner (Sun.Star Pampanga, 2017).

Apparently, teaching classical subjects such as Araling Panlipunan has led to an

understanding that history and social issues is boring for pupils. This has led to the actions

which requires the teacher to integrate ICT in their class discussion. This action research

will try to evaluate the effects of ICT, Youtube videos in particular on the performance of

pupils in Grade 6.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

There is an unending search of looking for effective ways on how to level up the

performance of the students in the classroom. Since, nowadays, most of the students are

engaged in technology there is no reason of why teachers should not use technology in

the classroom. After all, employing technology in the classroom is the best way in getting

the learners’ interest and in reaching them out even when they are out of the school. This

how the K to 12 is showing us – the environment of technology in the classroom.

Taking into account the importance of using video and visual objects for teaching, some

universities utilize YouTube as a complementary teaching tool. This work analyses

students’ perspectives on the usage of YouTube for learning, their corresponding usage

patterns, and associated factors prompting them to use YouTube (Moghavvemi, 2018).

In a study about social media as a complementary learning tool for teaching and learning,
researchers found out that YouTube is an effective tool that can enhance the learning

experience if the video is indeed relevant to the subject at hand. It is recommended that

instructors integrate YouTube into their respective courses to benefit from its inherent

advantages in the context of learning/teaching.

Various studies have embarked on the use of technology as a tool in enhancing the

teaching-learning process. Social media is an ingrained part of today’s society. Our

students are constantly on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and likely many sites we’re not

hip enough to know about, and by reading this blog, you’re interacting with social media

at this very moment. If you want to bring the “real world” into the classroom, consider

integrating social media into your lessons (Edudemic, 2015).

YouTube is an excellent option for flipped classrooms in that students can watch lectures

and resources before entering the classroom. The opportunities for student-created video

are plenty. Students will enjoy watching each other explain a concept, review a book or

movie, stage their own interpretation of a scene from a play, create public service

announcements, or report on news stories. Again, like blogging, since the material will be

seen by a wider audience, students will be more apt to do their very best in creating a

video, and they will enjoy being able to express their creativity as they connect more

deeply with course material.

Youtube is a great entertainment tool and learning tool as well. Everyone can create their

own channel, share their videos, and comment on others’ (Quia, 2016).
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The focus of this study are the following:

1. Determine the level of performance of selected Grade 6 pupils in Araling Panlipunan

of Sta. Cruz Elementary School using videos and learning materials found in Youtube?

2. Is there a significant difference between the academic performance of selected Grade

6 pupils before and after the use of Youtube videos as learning materials in Araling

Panlipunan of Sta. Cruz Elementary School?

3. Know the actual pros and cons of using Youtube videos and learning materials in the

classroom.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The study involves a class of Grade 6 pupils from Sta. Cruz Elementary School in which

may be viewed as a restriction that limits the generalization of results. Moreover, this

research aims to determine the effectiveness of using Youtube videos and learning

materials in the performance of Grade 6 students in their Araling Panlipunan. Students

will be covered as participants in this qualitative research where one of them will be

undergoing class discussions using Youtube videos and learning materials. This study

was conducted during the 3rd and 4th Quarter of the SY 2017-2018.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Sampling

For this study, a Grade 6 class is selected to be the participant. At the start of the 3 rd

Quarter, the teacher decided to make use of videos and learning material found in

Youtube in each topic. Because of his newly acquired LCD projector, he was able to show

vidoes that he personally downloaded from Youtube. The 3rd quarterly grades of forty (20)

randomly selected pupils will be evaluated together with their 4th quarterly grade. The

teacher will be using Youtube videos and learning content were carefully selected to fit

the level of understanding of the students.

B. Data Collection

The use of Youtube videos and learning materials in the subject Araling Panlipunan lasted

for a quarter. The 3rd Quarter and 4th Quarter grades of the sample pupils were recorded

and evaluated.

C. Statistical Treatment

The t-test function of SPSS Version 20 was employed to test if the hypothesis presented

in this study is correct. The formula used is as indicated below.

Table 1 shows the summary of the academic grades of selected pupils in the subject

Araling Panlipunan for the 3rd and 4th Quarter. It can be noted that all of the selected

pupils performed better compared to the previous quarter. The result could be attributed

to the frequent use of Youtube based videos and learning materials by the teacher to

enhance the experience and interaction among pupils in her subject.

Table 2 shows the result of t-test employed in the academic performance of students in

Araling Panlipunan. Based from the statistics, it can be concluded that the there is a

significant difference between the academic performance of students after the teacher

used Youtube videos and learning materials inside the classroom.

Data shows that the p-value (p=0.0001) is lower than 0.05 and by conventional criteria,

this difference is considered to be very statistically significant.

B. Conclusions

From the above presentation, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The academic grades of selected students suggest that their level of performance

improved after the teacher integrated the use of Youtube based videos and learning

resources in their classroom routines in Araling Panlipunan.


2. The use of Youtube videos and contents resulted to better academic performance

compared to the traditional way. This study revealed that there is a significant difference

between the grades of students before and after the integration of Youtube videos in their

Araling Panlipunan class.

3. After implementing the use of Youtube videos and content in the classroom, the

following observations were drawn:

a. The use of Youtube videos and content enables the teacher to share high quality

multi-media instructional materials that makes the learning process easier and fun.

b. Youtube videos not only help teachers in presenting the lessons, it is also a way

for students to share and present their ideas and concepts through interaction during the

course of the lesson.

c. Careful selection of videos and learning materials in Youtube should be observed

as the site is free and there are a lot of users who upload video to spread misinformation.

Through the use of Youtube, teachers and students get to interact and discuss important

matters pertaining to various topics that may enhance the students’ critical thinking and

analyzing skills.

C. Recommendations

From the conclusions, the following recommendations were drawn:


1. Traditional way and teaching and the use of Youtube videos and contents to

students both showed good result, thus the combination of both method is highly

recommended.

2. The use Youtube videos and materials garnered better result compared to purely

traditional way therefore, teachers are encouraged to utilize this device and fully integrate

it in their classroom interactions.

3. Youtube videos and content is a great addition to available resources of a school

thus, its purchase and use is highly recommended in teaching Araling Panlipunan on

Grade 6 pupils.

were carefully selected to fit the level of understanding of the students.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: This research is believed applicable to Grade 4 pupils of this

study. The use of Youtube based materials is limited to classroom use and somehow

acted as visual aids in the everyday interaction with the teacher. Results may vary if

employed to other grade level.


ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This research will help others to understand the role of

technology in enhancing the present situation of learning environment. Technology must

be used properly in order to provide positive result to students.
