Electrostatics -1

1.Besides being responsible for Gravitation and Electromagnetic forces respectively, enlist three other
differences between mass and charge? (1.5)
2.In day to day life, quantization of charge is of no consequence. True or False? Explain. (1)
3.In terms of Field , how can Newton's 3rd law be violated in case of moving charges?(1.5)
4.How can symmetry be used to prove that net field at the centre of any regular polygon(say, 9-sided )
of charges must be zero? What would be the net field magnitude and direction at centre of such a
polygon, if a single charge is removed.(4)
5.A positively charged particle of mass m falls freely under gravity(g) through a certain height from rest,
after covering which gravity disappears and an electric field E appears immediately, directed vertically
upward. If particle stops after covering same distance, find an expression for charge?(2)
6.An electric field line is the path taken by a charge when released from rest in an electric field. True or
False? Explain.(2) OR,
'Gauss' Law won't hold if Coulomb's Law was not an inverse square law, rather an inverse cube, or linear
proportional law'. Explain. (2)
7. Use Gauss's Law to find the field of an infinite sheet of charge.(3)
8.A charge Q ,of mass m, is revolving around an infinite line of charge in a circular orbit, with velocity vo .
Find the linear charge density of the line of charge. If the charge decides to revolve in a higher
orbit(larger radius), how will the velocity be affected?(3)
9. A test charge q is located at a distance d/2 above the mid-point of the line joining the charges +Q and
-Q, where d is the distance between these charges. Find the force on q?(3)
10. A particle of mass m, charge -q, is thrown horizontally from a height h with a velocity v above an
infinite charged sheet. If it collides with sheet at a horizontal distance R from the point of projection,
find the surface charge density of sheet. (3)

11.Two infinitely large planes A & B intersect each other at right angles and carry
uniform surface charge densities + σ and -σ . Deduce and sketch the electric field
lines in the four regions.(2)
