Expansion Report-2019

Asheville, NC

Asheville, North Carolina, was on our list for expansion consideration. Thorough

research in this city sufficed to establish its worth for expansion for our entity. Ashville being

one of the cities with a considerable elderly population, a decision to gather as much information

and data as possible, was arrived at.

Population of the Elderly Individuals in the City

The city of Asheville in Northern Carolina encloses a considerable number of senior

citizens among its population. Firstly, 16 percent of the population is seniors. Primarily,

7
Asheville contains close to 4,000 seniors who reside alone, which accounts for around 35 percent

of the total number of seniors (Census, 2020). Of this, 1700 work either in the formal or informal

settlement. Of the 4000 seniors who reside alone, 75 percent are female, with 67 percent of male

individuals who are 65 years and above being in a relationship as compared to 35 percent for the

females. Conversely, 40 percent of females who fall in this category are widowed as compared to

17 percent males. Only 7 percent of seniors in Asheville live below the poverty line.

Average household income in Asheville

This data was crucial in determining the feasibility of establishing the insurance business

in the city. Thus, the income of an average household in Asheville is a vital criterion worth

considering in the study conducted. Data obtained indicated that an average family in Asheville

has a mean annual income of 46,464USD (Data, 2020). This figure is less compared to the mean

yearly income of 61,937USD across the whole of the United States. This figure is in comparison

to the mean income in 2016 that totaled 44,946USD representing a 3.3 percent yearly

augmentation.

8
Data indicating the income earned in Asheville’s households from 2014 to 2017 (Data, 2020).

The number of hospitals in the city

Research obtained illustrates that acquiring insurance augments access to health care.

Consequently, this factor minimizes the unfavorable outcomes associated with being uninsured.

With this probability in mind, it was imperative to examine the number of health facilities within

the City of Asheville. In addition to the city of Asheville harboring a good number of hospitals,

the studies conducted indicated that the health facilities in Asheville are advanced and well,

equipped with establishment like the Mission Hospital having a bed capacity of 815 beds

(Mission, 2020). Such observations further enhancing the city’s feasibility of a potential area of

operation for our insurance company.

The number of nursing homes in Asheville

9
Nursing homes are an astonishing way of ensuring that the loved ones get the required

services they require. Nursing homes offer specialized health care services to seniors because

they afford skilled nursing facilities (Senior, 2020). The facilities enclose medication

administration, emergency services, and comprehensive care of the elderly. In these facilities, the

safety of the seniors is guaranteed because of the caregivers and nurses present in them.

Furthermore, because the nurses in these institutions are highly trained, the care that they offer

can not suffice at home, especially if the seniors develop complications. That is why it was

pivotal for us to carry a comprehensive study on the number of nursing homes in the city and the

kind of care offered within these institutions.
