Hello Everyone. When the Christmas magazine went out, I wasn’t expecting it to
be so long before the next issue would appear on your doorsteps. What a lovely
cover picture to brighten us all up. Thank you to Jennifer Beales for sending it in.
All I need to say now is a Happy Easter to you all.
Best wishes

TO ALL
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
PARISHIONERS
At this time of year, as we look forward with hope to Easter, we are mindful of the
promise of Spring, of improving weather, brighter days and better times ahead. Our
Christian hope in the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ sustains us always, even in
the darkest times. Easter is hope personified.
I look to hymns for inspiration, the hymns we look forward to singing once more very
soon.
Most of us will know the lovely hymn: Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy.
Reassuringly familiar, it's often chosen for weddings and funerals too as it takes us
through our lives in a day, reminding us of God's constant presence with us: “Lord of
all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust ever child-like no cares could destroy, be
there at our waking and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts Lord, at the break of
the day.” Every new day brings fresh hope! Perhaps child-like trust is in short supply at
the moment, having been sorely tested by numerous experts bombarding us with
facts in a world where everything is impossibly complicated. Am I alone in finding
statistics impenetrable/confusing? Trust in the time of Covid - where everyone is so
suspicious and mistrustful of one another- is a huge challenge; and the trust “no cares
could destroy” is perhaps beyond us, because our cares are many and hugely varied.
On a personal note, my mum is in a care home and I haven't been allowed to see her
for many months; her dementia has worsened because of the lack of family contact.
Like so many families we are at our wit's end as to how to retrieve this difficult
situation. For everyone the waiting is endless and our patience is wearing thin. We
are vulnerable, our souls are weary, we yearn for replenishment and justice.
Another well-known Easter hymn: There is a green hill far away has the line “and
trust in His (Jesus's) redeeming love and try his works to do”. Easter brings us joy and
salvation. It gives us a reason to carry on with hope in our hearts. We have never
needed Easter so much as we do this year. “This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and
sorrow...” (another hymn!) Trust in the Lord always; he will never fail us.

REVEREND JANE
"Growing up on a farm in North Lincolnshire - I am
a rural girl. After a personal tragedy in my family I
turned to God and I found him ready and waiting to
wrap me in his arms.
After many years of soul searching I followed my
calling, left behind a career in finance and banking,
and trained for ministry.
Ordained in 2007 I came to Gayton in January
2011 and I have to say I find my work here an
absolute privilege. Great people, great place and
a great team! I am passionate about teaching and
sharing the love God has for us with all ages for I
know His love is just as relevant for all people
today, as it was yesterday, and will be tomorrow."
This is how Revd. Jane described herself here what it does not tell you was just
how dedicated she was to the Church here and the village.
She cared about the building (and her vision of what it could be is almost
complete) but she cared much more about the people here – those with Faith,
those with other faiths and those with no faith.
She was concerned about all aspects of village life and met so many people
through her work.
She never conducted a wedding without sharing in the joy of the bride and groom.
She never led a funeral without feeling the sadness of the bereaved.
But she was happiest with children and loved baptisms, Messy Church and her
work in our schools.
She was no stern faced cleric but was full of fun and laughter and game for
anything – even climbing the tower at Grimston and bell ringing, with Messy
Church at the beach and dancing and singing in Church.
She was with us for almost exactly ten years but for the last two and a half years
she has been terribly unwell. In August last year she was diagnosed with terminal
pancreatic cancer. We prayed for a return to good health and then we prayed
for a graceful end.
Jane died on February 8th. with her brother and sister with her and is now at
peace.
Jane will always hold a very special place in our hearts and we all hold happy
memories of her.

POTT ROW METHODIST CHURCH
,
To all our readers WELCOME BACK
Stephen Watts
The Annual Parochial Church meeting will be held on Friday 16th April 2021 at
7pm. Due to Covid restrictions the meeting will be held via Zoom.
If you would like to join the meeting please let us know by Wednesday 14th April
and we will send you the link.
I am still collecting used postage stamps to raise some funds for the Norfolk
Ornithologists' Association although the present lockdown situation makes it
difficult for people to get the stamps to me. Could you therefore please keep your
stamps until such time as it is safe to either drop them off for me or I can pick
them up from you. I have also had to find another outlet for the stamps and my
new contact tells me that the franking messages are as interesting as the stamps
so if you could cut off the top half of the envelope and put it in a bag that would be
great. Failing that a good quarter inch of envelope all round the stamp is ideal.
Many thanks to everyone. Stay safe and well.

A View from Lanky Hill
In contact again! I last wrote at the end of 2020, now nearly a third of a year
ago. Still, I do not intend to dwell on the cause of this absence. We all know
the reason why!!!
I can only inform you that we are all well, have had our first jabs and look
forward to a lock up free summer!
The wet weather of 2020 saw 32 inches of rain deposited on Lanky Hill. This
has been followed by nearly 7 inches of rain in January and February of this
year. The flooding can be seen all over the county of Norfolk. Sharon has
been driving weekly to Swaffham for almost 20 years. She has always gone
Narford way, not via Narborough. Not this winter, Narford Bridge has been
flooded all this year. Don't tell her, but the Narborough main road route is
infinitely safer and quicker.
Enough of dull, mundane statistics, let me now relate a couple of true stories
which might be of interest. Even the younger generation will be aware that
until some time in the 1960s there was a railway line between King's Lynn
and Hunstanton. Stations were at North Wootton, Wolferton, Dersingham,
Snettisham and Heacham – all of them easily visible these days, except the
one at Dersingham. Recently I had reason to visit it to purchase some
paving slabs. Let me explain: we've long had a garden bench, unused, in the
garden. Expecting a fine summer, Roger, our expert gardener suggested
placing Father's old bench on some slabs, looking out towards the village and
the setting sun. These came from a builders' merchants situated on the site
of the old Dersingham station. The old platforms are used to store building
materials and the station itself and ticket office are where all the accounting
and paying take place. There's also an intact signal box, which I'm told is the
nesting site for several pairs of swallows in the summer. Very efficiently run
as a family business, it is well worth a visit should you need such a facility.
Dr Beeching's closure of railways locally was not confined to the Sunny
Hunny Line! Disappearing also was the South Lynn Station (Saddlebow) and
the associated Midland and Great Northern line, which served rural South
Lincolnshire and North Norfolk. This line was rather rudely nicknamed “The
Muddle and Go Nowhere Line”. More importantly, the main line direct from
King's Lynn to Norwich via Swaffham and East Dereham, was abandoned
except for a short length from King's Lynn to the old Middleton / Leziate
Station. This is still in use once a day to transport the valuable resinous sand
mined locally into King's Lynn goods yard, just behind Morrisson's
supermarket. Should you be stopped at the Tennyson Avenue crossing
gates at about mid morning, don't be surprised if, 24 large bulk trucks drawn
by an ancient diesel locomotive appears, each truck carrying about 100 tons
of sand. No wonder the old loco is puffing and blowing rather.

.
Enough of railways and associated tales. Let me relate one at my own expense.
Leaving boarding school at 18 years of age, I spent three years studying at
Shuttleworth Agriculture to obtain a National Diploma in Agricultre (N.D.A.) This
meant three more years of long holidays at Christmas, Easter and summertime,
the latter two generally spent working on local farms. At Christmastime I helped
a friend who farmed in a small way at Dersingham – Dun Cow Farm. Fattening
about 200 turkeys for Christmas Day, prior to Christmas, I was employed
catching these birds and without going into details, preparing them ready for the
table. Most of the customers collected them just before Christmas, leaving a
few to be delivered by my friend Robin and myself on Christmas Eve.
Needless to say, this task was conducted with a fair bit of Christmas spirit taken
on board, firstly at each stop we were well refreshed and finally stopping at The
Feathers pub, we celebrated in style. Remember this was before the coming of
the breathalyser. Returning late back to Dun Cow Farm , we decided to reward
ourselves with a bit of supper. A freshly cooked ham was available and Robin
duly carved several slices and we both enjoyed a late supper, plus a bit more
alcohol! Robin had just purchased an electric carving knife and was keen to
demonstrate its excellence. This involved plugging into the power point on the
cooker and turning on the power. Oh dear! Guess what happened. Firstly, the
power point was not switched off before I returned home (with an invitation to
return on Christmas morning) and Robin went to bed.
The phone rang at home early the next morning. A rather hung over Robin told
me to expect a somewhat frosty reception from his mother. A very organised
lady, she had prepared a large turkey for her large family and put it in the oven
expecting to get up early, turn on the power and return to bed whilst the slow
cooking was looking after itself. On the way downstairs the good lady smelt a
familiar aroma of well roasted turkey. All was forgiven in the true Christmas spirit
and the electric carving knife was binned immediately.
I cannot end this article without giving thanks to the many people including
scientists, virologists and all members of the NHS who have, at their own
personal health risk, got us to the point where we can start to see the end of the
road in defeating this accursed virus. Well done!

Thank You
A huge 'thank you' and 'well done' to Rebecca Saxby who is resigning from the
Village Link Magazine delivery team. Each month for the past twenty years or
so, she has delivered fifty eight magazines in Station Road, Birch Drive and Low
Road, Roydon as far as The Three Horseshoes, The Old Stores and John
Wicks. It's one of the largest delivery rounds and it has always been completed
whatever the weather. With ten magazine deliveries per year, simple maths
suggest she has put well over 10,000 magazines through letter boxes as a
volunteer supporting our communities.
We are grateful to Jenny Gleed of Station Road who has only recently arrived in
our village and who has volunteered to take on this delivery.
Littering
We've lived in Pott Row now for 12 years and love the village and life in the village.
Photo's like the one of the skies at sunset recently posted on the village Facebook
page just make your heart swell with pride. But unfortunately, down below on the
ground there is an ugly picture of litter. From beer cans, beer bottles, discarded
McDonalds containers, face masks and plastic to fly-tipped rubbish. Not to
mention dog poo bags just thrown into the hedges or the dog mess simply left on
the grass verge or sidewalks for unsuspected victims to tread in.
Where is the pride in your environment? Where is the regard for other people?
Where is the responsibility of taking care of our planet? It does not help to say: 'It
is the Council's responsibility', or 'Someone else will clean it up', or mutter that
someone ought to do something about it. If we all have the attitude of thinking it is
someone else's job, we will soon live in a village overrun with litter. It makes me
think of the little story of Everybody, Somebody, Everybody and Nobody. It goes
like this:
'This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and
Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that
Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody
got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody
could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that
Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.'
So, are you going to be Everybody, Somebody, Anybody or Nobody, or take
responsibility and help by walking with a black bag (or two) and a litter picker?

GRIMSTON PARISH COUNCIL
Finance 2021-2022: The Council agreed at the January Meeting that there should
be no increase in the precept for the coming year and as last year the Band D rate of
£29.17 will stay the same.
Footway Lighting: The Council has accepted the tender to replace its current
lighting stock with LEDs, the lights should provide long term financial and energy
savings. The Council has applied to the Borough Council for a grant to meet part of
the costs and work is expected to take place in the Summer.
Jubilee Clock: The Clock has now not been working for several months and due to
lock down it has not been easy to get a specialist to look at the fault. The repair has
now been scheduled and the clock will be back in working order very shortly.
Facebook: The local Facebook group has become a valuable resource for
residents, therefore with its agreement, the Council will now relay useful information
to the group. Cllr Sue Fraser has been appointed by the Council to this role and has
already started posting.
Dog Bins: The Council has replaced several of the old dog bins around the Parish
and moved the bin on Lynn Road, which was knocked askew, to near the litter bin by
the Phone Box. This was a necessary but unpleasant job and the Council thanks
Cllrs Peter Coleman and Michael Boldero for carrying out the task.
Council Website: The Council website has been updated to include the direct link
to Highways online fault reporting as well as links to Anglia Water website and Postal
Vote Registration.

Pig Unit
I am sure that we are all relieved that the pigs have gone at last and hopefully
it will not be too long before St Andrews Lane returns to its quiet peaceful state.
It certainly makes us cheerful to see all the daffodils that were planted a few
years ago. Thankfully the removal of the pigs will mean that there will be no
more pollution reaching the stream as it flowed into the River Cong and then
into the R Babingley and that the rivers will recover soon.
Hedging.
I would especially like to thank all the landowners for the tremendous work in
cutting back all the hedges. Broadgate Lane looks a different road so much
safer now that the hedges have been cut back so well.
Highways
The roads have taken a battering over the winter, with all the rain, lying water
and the snow. The high water table has also meant that there has been some
unusual flooding. The worst being at the junction of St Andrews Lane with Roy-
don. Highways are aware of this and hopefully they will find a solution during
the next few months.
It will be necessary for St Andrews Lane to be closed in order to replace the
manhole torn off by one of the sweepers clearing the road of mud. Whilst the
road is closed, we hope that highways will take advantage of the lack of traffic
to do some necessary repairs.

Planning
Almost all recent planning applications have been granted,
Please do not hesitate to let us know of any problems so that they can be
resolved as soon as possible.
Your Councillors are always willing to help with any issue.
On a personal note, since Christmas I have gone 17 days with no toilet or very
reduced use of one. We have not been able to use washing machine , dishwasher
and showers have been non-existent or very quick. I am not alone; neighbours
have been in the same predicament.
May I ask that if you are experiencing problems with your sewers that you please
report the issue to Anglian Water. The more people that complain, the more
chance we have of action. We as a village have also allowed the over build of
new properties on an old sewer system that has proved it cannot cope. I'm not
against new housing, but the infrastructure has to be there to cope with the
increased capacity, it clearly isn't. I have counted some 35 new builds in a mile
radius of the Grove in the past 12 years. That's a lot more pressure.
This is not about the weather, other villages locally have the same rainfall, their
sewer systems cope
.
Our MP has been fighting our corner, and he was told by Anglian Water that our
sewers are going to be relined, when is another matter, as we were told the work
would be done in February, I've not seen any action.
Please let's speak up together, when we need to. I promise you that having a
toilet with water sitting at the top of the pan is not a pleasant experience, but
unless we as a community act together, to complain when issues arise, and stop
the over building on our failed system, then the problem is only going to get
worse.
Regards MDT

Pets Corner
So, here we are at the beginning March. Let us hope we are now heading in the
right direction regarding the Pandemic.
As you all know, we have left the EU on the 31st of December 2020. It does have
an influence on your pet travelling with you when we are allowed again to travel to
holiday destinations in Europe. In the past, if you would have liked to take your
pet with you on holiday to Europe, you could do so on a Great Britain Pet
Passport as part of the PETs Scheme run by DEFRA. As from the 1st of January
2021, this is no longer a valid travel document for your pet. It has been replaced
with an Animal Health Certificate that has to be in the language of the country you
enter Europe as well as in English. The process does take time, so it is important
that you get advice from your vet well in advance, at least four months before your
proposed travel. Please also consult the Government website (Gov.uk,Pet Travel
to and from Great Britain) to familiarise yourself of the requirements if you wish to
have an Animal Health Certificate for your pet to travel.
A third way is to make use of the services of a pet-sitter, again making use of
word-of-mouth recommendations.

History at St Botloph's
Having spent several months lurking around amongst the graves I am close to
completing a comprehensive plan of the churchyard at St Botolph's. I have
utilised the plan which was already in existence, showing a small part of the 'old'
South East area. I have divided the churchyard up into sections and grave
numbers (to make locating graves easier) and have added photographs of
memorials and epitaphs where they are legible. I have to thank David Bird for his
assistance in lending me his photographs taken in 2016 which helped in reading
the epitaphs. The photos held will be those taken recently (2020); unfortunately
there are memorials that have become completely illegible and there are graves
that have no memorial and may even be unrecorded. I am hoping to carry out
some research on the residents of our churchyard especially the families who
appear to have died out or moved on. Please get in touch if you have any
information about residents which you would be willing to share on the electronic
history data base of our village. The aim will be that the Church will hold this data
for anyone looking for a relative.
Steph has completed biographies of all our rectors from the Middle Ages to 1930
and is trying to make contact with the families of our more recent rectors to ask if
they would like to add some information. It is possible that the rectors will appear
on the village church website.
If you have any stories/memories of the churches (Roydon, Congham, St Luke's
and the chapels included) or the rectors we would love to receive them to keep
for future generations. Should anyone have any photographs to share I can scan
whilst you wait if you rather not let them out of your sight.
Thanks to everyone who has already helped us, stay safe.
The village hall will be open For all to use on may 1st
May 6th has been booked for an election of the police & crime commission
