Read the following ‘case’.
Write your answers to the questions in the spaces provided.

The Case:
The Monks and the Girl

Two monks are travelling in a horse cart for a long journey.


Both are heads of monasteries. One is much senior, heading the highest monastery of the land.

Some parts of the path are filled with muddy water.


Water flow continues in some other parts.

At a distance, a young woman in brilliant kimono.


Apparently hesitating to cross a long patch of muddy overflowing water.

“Stop the cart.” the older monk said.


The cart is halted.
Looking gently at the girl, the older monk says:
“Come, get inside.”

Bending down a little, the monk catches hold of her one hand; his other hand supporting her
back as she is lifted up. The girl is seated beside him.
The cart crosses the water flow and stops as the monk suggested. He helps the girl to get down
from the cart more or less the same manner by which she got inside.

By evening, the cart is about to reach the inn.

The young monk turns towards the other monk and utters:
“Master, you are considered the most revered head of the supreme monastery of the land.
Our tradition forbids even the thought of a woman. Then how could you carry her?”

“Yes, I carried her. And, I dropped her there.


But are you, still carrying her?”

The young monk bowed to deep silence.
