Lab/Application #1: Ohm’s Law Verification

Given: 11/02/2021 Due: 18/02/2021 at 12:00 p.m.

Purpose: This exercise is to examines Ohm’s Law, one of the fundamental laws governing the
electrical field. It states that voltage (V) is equal to the product of current (I) by resistance (R).

Instructions: Read the procedures carefully before attempting the lab/Application. Please note
that this is an individual Lab/Application.

Procedure:

Figure 1.0

1. If a given resister is placed in the circuit (Figure 1.0), with a source (E) voltage of zero (0V),
a DMM set to measure DC current and inserted in-line (series) between the source and
resistor. Record the current the meter would indicate in Table 1.0.
2. With the source set to 2 volts, determine the current the meter would indicate and record in
Table 1.0.
3. Repeat step 2 for the remaining source (E) voltages in Table 1.0.
4. Replace resistor 1 with 2. Repeat steps 1 through 3 using Table 1.1.
5. Using the recorded current values from Tables 1.0, and 1.1, create a plot of current versus
voltage. Plot all curves/lines on the same graph. Voltage is the horizontal axis and current is
the vertical axis.

Questions:

1. Does your data support Ohm’s Law (state proof)? 4 Marks

2. Is there a linear relationship between current and voltage (state proof)? 2 Marks
3. What is the relationship between the slope of the plot line and the circuit resistance?
2 Marks
4. Note: when measuring current, the meter must be connected in series with the load in
consideration, state why. 4 Marks

Laboratory Reports
 Unless specified otherwise, all lab exercises require a formal laboratory report.
 Lab reports are individual endeavors not group work even if the practical exercise was done
in groups.
 The deadline for reports is one week after the exercise is performed and no more than 1hour
and 15 minutes in the class time.
 Fifteen percent (15%) of grade will be subtracted for labs handed in after the 1hour and 15
minutes mark up to two days after. Reports/labs are not acceptable beyond two (2) days after
due date. Labs must be done in lab sessions.
 Upload all labs to google classroom
A basic report should include: A cover-page, a title, statement of the Objective/purpose (what is
under investigation), precautions/ errors, Conclusion (explanation and analysis of the lab data
which links the Objective/purpose to what was found or verified), Data Tables and Graphs, and
answers to any problems or questions posed in the exercise.
