The first female prime minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s Conservative

Party leader and served three terms as Britain’s prime minister from 1979 to 1991. She’s also
nicknamed as “Iron Lady”. She gained this nickname when she gave a speech in the Soviet press
about attacking communism. She’s born on October 13, 1925, in Grantham, England. She’s also
famous because of hat she said about the society that “There is no such thing as society.”
Margaret made this comment about the society, “I think we have gone through a period when too
many children and people have been given to understand “I have a problem, it is the
Government’s job to cope with it!” or “I have a problem, I will go and get a grant to cope with
it!” “I am homeless, the Government must house me!” and so they are casting their problems on
society and who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and
there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to
themselves first… There is no such thing as society. There is living tapestry of men and women
and people and the beauty of that tapestry and the quality of our lives will depend upon how
much each of us is prepared to take responsibility for ourselves and each of us prepared to turn
round and help by our own efforts those who are unfortunate.”

Individualism is an outlook that focuses on human independence and the importance of relying
to ourselves. It states that one has the ability to control his decisions and choices in life. One has
the right choose what kind of life and future he is going to pursue. It is all about being self-
reliant.

In my deduction, Margaret Thatcher simply states that people should try to resolve their own
problems first then rely to the government as the last resort to solve the problems. The
government can also help its people but we should not just solely rely to them. Simply because
everything that happens in our life is our choice. Even though we are forced to do other things,
it’s still one’s choice to do it or not. Her thought says that individualism can help us to improve
and boost ourselves.
