Feline Friends, The Greatest Pets

The Ancient Egyptians believed that cats were a sort of divine creatures. They would

worship and idolize them in the depictions of gods and would be treated much greater than any

other animal. A similar practice is happening today with these felines, on the internet. We as a

people enjoy the presence of cats very much, they bring a feeling of comfort with them that isn’t

replicated by other animals. Cats make for the greatest furry companion to have at one’s side.

There are various reasons for this, their emotional support, independence, and convenience are

all great examples.

My first idea as to why cats make for the best pets is because they are very independent

creatures. This is a huge bonus for pet owners because it allows for you to be away for longer

amounts of time and you will have the peace of mind to know that they can take care of

themselves. Of course, you still need to feed them yourself and give them water to drink, but cats

know how to clean themselves, use the litterbox themselves, and even entertain themselves. Cats

can even manage themselves outdoors. While it is scary to let your cat go out often, they enjoy it

very much and will appreciate you letting them do so as well. Cats are natural hunters and love

to be outdoors to hunt and explore, even if they don’t catch anything. A cat’s independence is an

incredible factor in the life of a pet owner, and I believe that it gives them an edge over many

other pets because of it.

After coming home from a long day at work there are few greater experiences than taking

a moment to relax and curl up with a feline friend. Cats are therapeutic animals and make people

feel calm and relaxed when around them. Cats also always tend to be soft and snuggly when you

come home because they want to see you and they want to be fed. In an article from Scientific

American, author Kate Wong says, “Cats naturally feel affection for those who feed, look after

and play with them, although they don’t always make that obvious.” (Wong, 2018) Many times,

it seems that cats are aware of when their owners are in distress and react accordingly. Simply

sitting and petting a cat can melt away stress and put you in a comforting experience. Cats are

the greatest option for a indoor pet owner.

Another way someone could think cats are not the best is because they think dogs are

more useful and expressive. Both points are completely valid; however, dogs cannot be owned

anywhere. Cats on the other hand can come with you no matter where you go. Dogs may have

more utility, but as a pet, dogs are difficult to keep in some environments especially if you’re

living in a small space. “Unlike cats, which are independent and can be left with food and water

for a couple of days if you go away for the weekend, dogs don't do well on their own.”

(Goodman, 2017) I can support this, because dogs are very unruly to own in small city

apartments whereas a cat can adapt to any indoor environment. Cats are just the better option for

most people.

Cats are also able to manage themselves very well outdoors on their own. While it can be

very scary to allow your pets to go outside by themselves, cats do enjoy it very much and use it

as an opportunity to hunt and explore. Of course, you can't leave them out for too long and it is

very important that you let them back in if they come to the door. This goes along with the

independence that cats have and doing this with your pet will build a stronger bond with you and

your pet. Having your pets be able to manage themselves outdoors without constant supervision

is a very important aspect for pet owners especially when living in a variety of places.

You may argue that dogs are just as capable as cats to be by themselves outdoors. While

this may be true, dogs are often far more trouble and get themselves lost much more often than

cats do when left unsupervised outdoors. Dogs are much more rambunctious and active animals

and cats are more docile and habitual. A cat will be more likely to return home after a day of

hunting or prowling because they follow the same routine each day and know how to remember

their surroundings.

Another huge benefit that cats have over other animals is that they are often very silent

animals. Cats don’t make a lot of noise when they walk or run. Cats rarely ever meow when they

are alone and when they do meow it is still rather quiet. While it is true that cats can be loud

when they are distressed or scared this will not commonly happen to a house cat. In comparison

to a dog a cat may as well make no noise at all. Dogs often bark very loudly which is a big

annoyance for dog owners and their Neighbors.

In review, it is simple to see why cats are the preferable option as a perfect household pet.

Cats are independent, therapeutic, capable outside, and make very little noise. If you are looking

for a pet to make your own, do yourself a favor and adopt a feline. Perhaps the Egyptians were

right about cats being creatures worthy of praise.
