you will have time to review the demo videos we made on the four basic hand stitches you will be
practicing tomorrow.

Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Questions:

1. Why is sewing an important life skill?
2. Where could you go to learn some basic sewing tips if you weren’t in this class?
Content to be presented in lesson:

Why is sewing important?

- Sewing was a survival skill for early civilizations.

- From the beginning all humans participated in the art of sewing.

- Sewing has not always been dominated by women.

- Men {tailor} and women {seamstress} make careers out of sewing.

- The first tailor dates back to 1297, and the first fashion designer was male.

- The most successful fashion designers of all times have been both men and women.

Sewing during Covid

- At the start of the pandemic, cloth masks were not in mass production

- If you knew how to sew, people were asking you to make masks or trying to sew them for

themselves.

- Ms. Graves has her own business and started making face masks to sell. She was also asked to

create a tutorial video, like the one you see here.

- Being able to sew proved very valuable during this pandemic.

Basic Sewing Equipment

- Scissors (Shears)

- Used to cut fabric and thread

- Thread

- Used with needles to create stitches

- Sharps (Needles)

- Utensil used to hand sew fabric together using thread

- Seam Ripper

- Used to rip out seams that may be messed up or need to be changed

- Thimble

- Used to protect your fingers from the ends of needles

- Straight Pins

- Used to hold fabric together before it is sewn

- Tape Measure

- Used to take measurements of people or of fabric

- Rotary Cutter

- Another cutting device to use on fabric, leave a nice clean cut line

- Rotary Mat

- Used as our base to work when you use the rotary cutter

Basic Tool Safety

- When you are not using the scissors, make sure they are fully closed
- When walking with scissors, carry them by the blade, not the handle. We learned this in

kindergarten but we don’t want to stab anyone

- If you are not using your needle OR straight pins, keep them pierced through your fabric or in a

pin cushion. We don’t want it to fall and get stepped on or accidentally stab someone

- When using the rotary cutter, you will pull the safety shield back. When you are done, put the

safety shield back on it. These blades are VERY sharp and we don’t want any accidents. Cut

slowly with a rotary cutter so you do not slip and ALWAYS use a mat!

Learning activities/procedures:

● Pre-test on sewing pattern symbols

● Lesson

● Measure Up! Activity

Summary/Closure/Review of Content:

Great job today guys! Are you excited to start sewing tomorrow? Please have your chromebooks

charged or bring a charger and bring headphones to class! If you are going to be done, PLEASE

come see us. We have sewing bags made up for anyone who will be gone. There will not be an

alternate assignment, we have given you plenty of notice for tomorrow.

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Measure Up! Students are going to get a sheet on how to take their measurements and a

measuring tape and they will take down their measurements. This will be good practice as it is

important to know for sewing and also if they ever needed to check their measurements with a

size guide.

Modifications for exceptional learners:

There will be videos demonstrating how to do the different body measurements in google

classroom for the students. Students who have a paraprofessional will be able to use their help.

We will also be monitoring students and guiding them as needed.
