Instructions: Answer question 6 any two more questions.

QUESTION 1.
The average normal strains measured by a strain rosette at angles of 00, 350, and 1250
counterclockwise from the horizontal x-axis at a point on the free surface of a plane stressed body

(b) The principal strains, the maximum in-plane shearing strain at the point, and the angle (relative
to the vertical plane) at which the maximum principal strain acts. (10 marks)
(c) The normal stresses (σx and σy) and the shearing stress (τxy) at the point. (10 marks)
(d) The normal and shearing strain on a plane inclined at 30o anticlockwise from the horizontal
plane. (4 marks)

(a) Calculate the value of the reaction at the supports. (5 marks)
(b) Draw the shear force and the bending moment diagrams. Label all the significant points
on both diagrams. (25 marks)
