A Mystery: The Ruins of Pompeii

A beautiful ancient Roman city, scenic by day, covered in volcanic ash by night. Pompeii

was its name… it was a Port city that was home to about 12,000 people before the volcanic

eruption. The people closest to Mount Vesuvius could do nothing but brace for death, while

those who were farther away from the volcano attempted to flee. Today, people are captivated by

the authenticity and development of new information involving Pompeii.

Fortunately, recent technology has allowed researchers to uncover more details

concerning the tragic event that took place in Pompeii and the city entirely. Because of the

development of technology, researchers have discovered a way to “peer into the casts” and this

allows them to “drawing [draw] a clearer picture of those people and what happened to them.

(Brown 2). Before the eruption, the people in the city of Pompeii were living their lives in the

most ‘normal’ way they knew. They hadn’t expected the volcano to erupt. These people were

caught off guard by this event, and because of that there is not a lot of primary evidence. But,

technology has been a step forward in learning about the city of Pompeii as the people once

knew it before. Moreover, scholars have been attempting to restore Pompeii because “Pompeii is

no longer a buried city” as of recently. (Twain 1). Like mentioned before, the city itself is

captivating and that attracts people to want to know more about this ancient delicacy. Luckily,

people can visit certain parts of the city to view the crisp authentic walls, floors, and ceilings of

the place the people once called home.

Furthermore, the ruins of Pompeii have become a site of interest for those wanting a taste

of ancient history. Most people find what is left to be quite interesting. An individual that

witnessed gave scholars primary evidence of this event. It described the time of day the eruption

occurred and, the witness said, “Sometimes it looked white, sometimes blotched and dirty”

(Pliny 1). Throughout his entry he used many other descriptive words to clearly state what he

saw. Little did he know, this would be very helpful to researchers in the future. Regarding what

the city looked like, there was a man named, Mark Twain who went and documented how the

ruins look. He reported, “long rows of solidly-built brick houses” and inside “the floors were all

mosaic” (Brown 3). As surprising as it may seem, the astonishing qualities were still present

even after the eruption. Scholars are trying to preserve what is left of this precious city. The

people in society are becoming more educated about this event, causing them to want to

understand it completely.

Lastly, the intriguing information and the beautiful city attracts the masses, for many

reasons. Pompeii’s development of research has become important to the advancement of

history. Many people are becoming interested in Pompeii and its history as new information is

being released. This event should be remembered by society because of how catastrophic it was,

but in the end, there is positive outcome for the people, as their lives will be remembered.
