Public Law 94-142
● Education for All Handicapped Children Act
● Passed by congress in 1975
● Guaranteed free public education for children with disabilities.
● Protect the rights for youths with disabilities.
● Later renamed to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)
I.D.E.A (Individuals with Disabilities and Education Act)
● Included the provisions of PL 94-142
● Extended the availability of a free and appropriate education for people who
are between the ages of 3 and 21.
● Education evaluation of students with disabilities to provide a proper plan for
them.
● Required students to be placed on a least restrictive environment from
non-disabled students.
I.E.P (Individualized Education Program)
● Individualized Education Program is a plan for meeting an exceptional
learners education needs, specifying goals, objectives, services, and
procedures for evaluating progress.
● Must be reviewed annually by parents, the child, a teacher, a professional
who has recently evaluated the child, principal, and other special education
resource.
John F. Miller
● Specifically a special education school for students with disabilities and
special needs.
● The school starts from pre kindergarten to grade 12.
● The student ratio of 6:1 is lower than the Nevada state level of 20:1
● Minority enrollment is 81% of the student body (majority Hispanic), which is
greater than the Nevada state average of 68% (majority Hispanic).
● John F. Miller also is also placed in the bottom 50% compared to all schools
with their proficiency levels.
Helen J. Stewart
● A special needs educational institution that takes students from the age 6-22.
● Student teacher ratio is 5.4
● Has a majority of Hispanics and Caucasian
● The school has 21 classrooms and building specialist for music, art, transition
services, adaptive physical education, and swimming.
Miley Achievement Center
● A school that takes in students with special needs grading from K-12.
● The school seems to dwell on behavior and emotional. Students benefit from
their education through emotional difficulties.
● Student teacher is 4:1 according to Niche
● 10% of the students are proficient in reading
● The majority of the students are 50% African American and 29% white
according to School Digger.
Variety
● Special needs institution that goes from grade K-5
● The school’s motto is to reach for the stars
● The main focus for Variety is for students to learn and improve on their
literacy.
● According to US News, the total minority enrollment is 67% and the students
who enroll have the majority of 97% who are economically disadvantaged.
Homebound
● An educational service that helps students attend school at home due to
illness, injury, or other medical related conditions.
● The school goes from K-12
● The sessions are conducted online.
● If a parent requests for homebound services, the following options will be
based on the students certain needs.
Least Restrictive Environment
● An education that meets a disabled student’s special needs in a manner that
is identical to the extent possible, to that provided student in general
education classrooms (Becoming a Teacher 11th Edition).
