How often have you thought you knew exactly what God was doing, only to find yourself confused, heartbroken
or astonished by His goodness? Do you know God’s character well enough to offer real hope to those who struggle
with injustice, brokenness or unanswered prayer? The God of limitless love and unbending justice refuses to fit our
glib answers. When world events, your life circumstances or Bible passages do not seem to mesh with what you
know of God, draw close to Him through the Bible and prayer. God invites you to know Him more intimately. God did
this for Israel’s leader Joshua as he prepared to take the city of Jericho.

Prayer When Disappointed

Joshua’s words and actions reveal his love for God and his humble trust in God’s authority. For every believer
crushed by disappointment or defeat, Joshua’s prayer provides a model:
■ The Lord was Joshua’s first resort with his questions. He did not complain to others or simply talk about
prayer.
■ Joshua genuinely sought the Lord, devoting time to prayer and to God’s answer. Joshua did not merely
say a few trite phrases.
■ Joshua influenced those around him to come to the Lord by praying aloud honestly with the community
leaders present.
■ Joshua demonstrated genuine humility and reverence before God. Not only did he fall facedown, but
he asked God to pardon his complaints.
■ Joshua approached God worshipfully as the “Sovereign Lord.” Though disappointed and confused,
Joshua embraced God’s complete right to rule in all things.
■ Joshua spoke to God as a Person who cares about His people and is deeply involved in their lives.
Joshua’s honest questions expressed his trust in God.23
■ Joshua prayed with passion for God’s honor in the world. God’s glory, seen by Israel’s victory, was
Joshua’s greatest desire. He concluded, “What then will you do for your own great name?”
Are you in the midst of a hard season of life? Steep yourself in the attributes of God. Ask God to draw you closer
to Him. Pray God’s promises in Scripture back to Him. Ask Him to deepen your desire for your trial to bring Him glory.
As you pray through the “lens” of God’s character, God will transform your perspective on your problems.
