TOPIC : PRESENT SIMPLE AND CONTINUOS
TEXTBOOK : GOING FOR GOLD-INTERMEDIATE
TIME : 50 minutes
TEACHING AIDS : textbooks , language maximizer , blackboard , handouts , notebooks , teacher’s book
SKILLS : reading , writing , speaking

AIMS : -to reinforce grammar knowledge about present simple and present continuous
-to answer a quiz about free time activities
-to read a text about films
-to discuss about their favourite film

ASSUMPTIONS : Ss were taught present simple and continuous , but they are still at a loss when dealing
With the use of either present simple or present continuous
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS : Ss still make confusions and some of them do not have a clear idea of how
to use the auxiliaries to form the tenses
STUDENT GROUPINGS : pair work , individual , lockstep

ACTIVITY 1 :
Warming up and checking homework .
T asks Ss how they are feeling , she puts down the absentees and then checks the homework . (ex.1 and
2 page 14 from language maximizer)
INTERACTION : T-Ss , Ss-T
TIMING : 7 minutes

ACTIVITY 2 :
AIM : -to increase Ss’ interest in the lesson (lead-in)
-to provide an approach to multiple matching task
TIMING : 10 minutes
INTERACTION :T-Ss , Ss-T
PROCEDURE : Ss read the text about eight different types of films (comedies , thrillers , adventure stories ,
horror films) . After that they read the descriptions of some persons and they have to decide
which film would be most suitable for each person of family . T teaches words that are not
known to Ss .
Ex. Grumpy =slightly , angry or annoyed .
I’m feeling grumpy because I’m tired .
T checks the answers and makes sure that Ss can justify their answers from the text .

ACTIVITY 3:
AIM : to extend the discussion into the films in general , by practising present simple
TIMING : 5 minutes
INTERACTION : pair work
PROCEDURE : This is a good opportunity for Ss to exchange opinions with their colleagues about their
favourite films . T. prompts when necessary

Ex : What type of film do you like ? Why ? Do you like watching a film on TV or going to
the cinema ?
Ss ask and answers in turns , speaking about the films they prefer .

ACTIVITY 4 :
AIM : to complete a quiz on free time activities
TIMING : 5 minutes
INTERACTION : pair work , individual , T-Ss
PROCEDURE : Ss are asked to continue their exercises from the language maximizer by completing some
quiz questions about free time activities with some verbs given in a box (ex. 1/14) . Then ,
they will have to answer the questions and find out what kind of person everybody is :
a lazy one , an interesting person with lots of different free time activities or a very active
person .

ACTIVITY 5 :
AIM : to practise on present simple tense
TIMING : 3 minutes
INTERACTION : Ss-T
PROCEDURE : Ss practise present simple by doing a multiple choice exercise (ex.3/15) also from their
language maximizers .

ACTIVITY 6:
AIM : to practise the rules of formation of affirmative , negative and interrogative forms of present simple
and continuous
TIMING : 10 minutes
INTERACTION : S-S , T-Ss
PROCEDURE : In order to increase Ss’interest in the topic , T forms two groups : one group of Ss receives
some cards with different sentences written on them with present simple and continuous .
Each pupil from the first group comes in front of the class and reads his/her sentence into
the 3rd person singular .
Ex 1 : Student A : I go to football matches every weekend .
Student B : He goes to football matches every weekend .
(about student A)

Ex 2 : A : I’m not feeling very well .


B : She isn’t feeling very well .

ACTIVITY 7 :
AIM : further practice on present simple and continuous
TIMING :10 minutes
INTERACTION : pair work , lockstep
PROCEDURE : T gives Ss a handout containing exercises regarding present simple and continuous . They
are asked to do ex. 2 where they have to find the mistakes with verbs that are not used in
continuous tenses and correct the sentences . The verbal forms are written on the board .
ACTIVITY 8 :

*Assigning homework-the rest of the exercises from the handout(if they are not finished during the class)
*Teacher’s appreciation
