Dear First Semester Student,

Before I give you an insight on how to navigate your way through the first semester of nursing school, I
want to congratulate you on being accepted into this amazing program.
First and foremost, I think that it would be beneficial for you to join Student Nurses of U of A (SNUA).
Being a member of this organization will give you the opportunity to connect, network, and socialize with
current students with similar interests, needs, and career goals. Recent and former graduates are also
invited to share their post-graduation life and work experiences, which is especially encouraging and
motivating whenever I feel like giving up.
Forging a close relationship with a few of the students in your cohort is a must. Since this group of friends
will understand exactly what you’re going through, you will be able to count on them to be your
emotional support, to boost your confidence whenever you are doubting yourself, and to help you de-
stress whenever you are feeling overwhelmed or going through a tough time.
Also, finding a healthy balance between your academic life and social life by asking for help whenever
needed, managing your time, and learning ways to study effectively is crucial. I feel I missed out on
having a lot of fun in my first semester not only because of the amount of coursework assigned, but also
due to the fact that I focused too much on trying to ace every quiz/test/exam. Instead, it is imperative that
you just strive to do your best, try to avoid procrastination, and prioritize your schedule to help you find a
healthy balance between your academics and your social life.
My final advice to you will be to stay focused on your goal even through challenging times, to learn from
your mistakes, to be open to constructive feedback, and to enjoy the process!
Wishing you all the best on this incredible journey!
Sincerely,
Sydney Mobley
