The UB Accounting Office was razed by fire, 24 November 2010, 2:45 am

The graduation rites for Octoberian graduates were held 23 November 2010. VP Jejomar Binay was
the guest speaker.

The vault containing the collections of the office for the week was spared from the fire. However, all
the cash in bills inside said safe were burned to ashes.

MJ Capuno, accounting officer, was in charge of the safe. Only she and Mrs. Clemencia Ramos have
access to the vault. Capuno is an alumna of Advo. She is from Inusloban, Bauan, Batangas.

The City Fire Marshall report says the fire broke out due to faulty electrical wiring.

The vault allegedly contains Php 786, 400.00.

Police investigators said there were recovered from the site, remnants of hand grenade akin to
those found in the bomb blast during the Salubong of 2010 in Taft Avenue, Manila last September .

Two weeks earlier, Seth Mirano, 32, head of the Jara Morados breakaway group of the New People’s
Army, declared on national TV their plan to destabilize the government. He disclosed the names of
top government officials who are in their ‘hitlist’. P-Noy and Binay’s names are on the list.

PNP Batangas Provincial Director Adriel Lopez said :”We are looking for all possible angles in this
case. Maraming pwedeng nagging dahilan ng sunog. Maaaring faulty wiring nga lang. P’wede ring
gawa to ng terorista. We also do not discount the possibility of the involvement of radical youth
groups in UB.”

Melvin Viania, 18, BSED – IV, leader of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) UB Chapter and
some other top officers of the organization staged a mass rally on 21 November 2010. The mass
action was launched as a declaration of the group’s opposition to the proposed tution fee hike.

The official log of the security officers of UB shows an entry on 24 November 2010 which records
the entry of Capuno her boyfriend Jurori Brie into the campus past midnight. They had with them a
red knapsack. They said, when asked by Kei Ann Austria, lady guard on duty that night, they are
going inside the campus to get Capuno’s laptop inside Brie’s locker. Brie is a faculty member of the
Tech Ed Department. He handles carpentry and welding courses.

The log says they went out at around 2:25 am.
