Eric Roth
Middle School Math Teacher
ASU Prep Digital Academy, ASU
Tempe AZ

Dear Mr Roth,

Thank you for accepting me as an intern for your Math 7 classes this semester. I am happy to
be here.

This is my rst semester as a post-baccalaureate non-degree certi cate candidate in the ASU
MLFTC program. This is my third act.

I began my misspent early adulthood as a hairstylist, but was not particulary talented at it, so I
enrolled in the University of Iowa’s Pharmacy program and graduated in 1985. I toiled as a
retail pharmacist for 8 years, then spent 3 years back at Iowa, studying pharmaceutics at the
graduate level. Sadly, I did not complete the program. I moved to New Mexico in 1997 and
worked for the US DHHS as a pharmacist for the Indian Health Services in Gallup, and in
Crownpoint NM. During that time, I enrolled in the University of New Mexico’s non-
traditional PharmD program, and chipped away at correspondence courses in clinical
pharmacy. I left IHS in 2000 and moved to Albuquerque to work for Express Scripts as a mail
order pharmacist, and nish clinical rotations to complete my PharmD degree in 2006.

During my long career in healthcare, I have been a consulting pharmacist for the NM
Department of Corrections, worked as a Long Term Care, Mail, Retail, outpatient clinic and
Hospital pharmacist. I am now ready for my third act - middle and secondary education. I
came to realize that my only truly happy moments as a pharmacist were when I was able to
educate co-workers and patients, So, now I want to teach for the remainder of my working
years.

I selected mathematics because I struggled with it as a child. I was lucky enough to get
tutored, and got on track during Jr. High & High school. I actually loved my math classes at
the U of I.

My learning for pleasure has been a serious study of Botanical Medicine & Herbology. This is
now on hold until I nish my education courses.

I am 90% nished reviewing for the NES Middle and Early Secondary Mathematics exam.

My hobbies include photography, gardening, cooking, reading sci- /fantasy novels, ranting &
posting food, ower and pet photos on Facebook, and watching TV.

I have lost 2 pets in the past year or so - my 20 year old ragdoll mix cat, and my 16 year old
Norwegian elkhound mix dog. Both of my old ladies were exceptionally nice animals. I am
now left with my red-haired stepchild, a fat, middle-aged ginger tabby that I inherited from a
previous pet sitter who moved to Maine and could not take him along. Garfunkel is not the
cat that I would have chosen, but he’s the little dude that I have. It’s taken 2 years, but he
seems to accept me as his fake mother now. He is my covid buddy.

My uncle succumbed to covid on MLK day, last month. He was 91 years old, and in relatively
poor health, so his odds were not good. I just wish he could have died in his sleep, instead.

Since I live alone, zoom fatigue is not yet an issue.

Sincerely yours,

Jennifer Hand, PharmD
