PLAN:
Scale Drawings
Common Core State Standards: 7.G.A.1: Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, such
as computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing, and reproducing a scale drawing at a different
scale.
Objective (Explicit): Students will be able to solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures.
Sub-Objectives:
Students will be able to use scale drawings of real objects (or spaces) or geometric figures to find actual
lengths and areas.
Students will be able to reproduce a scale drawing at a different scale (scale up or down).
Engage
My opening slide, for students to see while they wait for the session to begin will have images of toys such as a doll house, Barbie,
action figures, toy cars & trucks, and a scale train set, with the Title, “Scale Models are everywhere!” This should pique their
curiosity.
Teacher Will: Students Will:
Conduct a brief review via peardeck slide containing the following info to Find the area of a rectangle, given it’s dimensions, and
activate prior knowledge: answer via peardeck:
Area: The amount of space covering a 2-dimensional figure. What is the area of a rectangle with Length = 16 cm and
Area of a rectangle = Length x Width. width = 11 cm?
Scale: The ratio of the length in a drawing (or model) to the
corresponding length on the real thing. This is also called “scale factor’.
When finding the actual area of a geometric figure from a scale drawing,
find the real figure’s dimensions first, before you calculate the area!
Explore
Students will watch an instructional video, then we will move on to the “Explain” phase, involving demonstration of
problem-solving techniques following a “teacher does, students do” format. See the “Explain” section, below.
Co-Teaching Strategy
This portion does not lend itself to co-teaching.
Differentiation Strategy
A link to the video will be provided in the chat for those who wish to see it
again.
Explain
Time for problem-solving, via the “teacher does, students do” format:
Differentiation Strategy
Students that do not wish to participate in class problem-solving will have a chance to play a math game in the next section.
Students that cannot attend the live class will have access to the recorded
session.
Elaborate
Game time!
Co-Teaching Strategy
What co-teaching approach will you use to maximize student achievement?
Differentiation Strategy
If a student cannot get into the game, for whatever reason, the zoom host
will share their screen, so all students may play, and may put their answers
in the zoom chat.
Evaluate
Exit ticket, homework and tutoring sessions
Teacher Will: Students Will:
Provide a link to an exit ticket: Complete the exit ticket via peardeck or other online quiz format:
1-2 vocabulary questions, and 1-2 problems to solve, similar to those
presented in class. Complete the corresponding lessons & homework in ALEKS or
Offer students the opportunity to do a project such as making their own other textbook.

1. true or false: to find the actual area of an object from a scale drawing, you must first find the actual
dimensions, before you calculate the area:
