Instructional Activity #3
Tutoring sessions for Eric Roth’s ASUPD Math 7B, 8A & 8B Students
Thursday 2/10/22, 1PM, Friday 2/11/22, 8Am & 11AM
Jennifer Hand, PharmD

My internship is with Mr. Roth’s ASUPD Math 7B, 8A & 8B courses. Live lessons are weekly
on Tuesdays (4 to 5 per week). Mr. Roth also offers drop-in tutoring sessions, Thursdays at 1PM and
Fridays at 8AM & 11AM.
The tutoring sessions are the best opportunity for providing instruction to the students, and meet
categories 7. Re-teaching concepts to struggling students and 8. Modeling a concept, activity, lab, math
problem, etc.
This week’s tutoring sessions involved joining Mr. Roth’s zoom room, where I was then assigned
to a break-out room with from 1 to 4 students who were attending to receive help with their respective
math topics in the ALEKS e-text. I am expected to manage the students, and give each student a turn
sharing their screen and displaying the problem in question. My role is to explain the problem, break
down the concepts, and demonstrate how to solve the problem, while answering their questions and
explaining why I do each step. Then, they bring up the next similar problem, and we go through it, but
this time I ask them questions about the problem. This may be repeated, depending on the results I’m
achieving via the scaffolding.
I have to manage the room, and make sure each student gets a turn. I usually work the session in
a round-robin fashion, circling around to give students turns, as time allows.
If Mr. Roth allows, sometimes the tutoring sessions go into overtime, which is OK with me. I
want to make sure the students can work similar problems independantly by the end of the session.
Students will drop in and out, depending on their needs. Students will also drop in simply to
observe. This is encouraged by Mr. Roth. If they are hungry for the knowlege, that’s a win!
This week, I helped struggling students, and demonstrated math problems & concepts covering
topics including solving simple linear equations, word problems involving percentages, adding &
subtracting integers, and solving simple inequalities and graphing the results.
After the tutoring session, I gave a verbal report to Mr. Roth, and identified which students
demonstrated understanding, and which ones were still confused, and let him know what their
continueing difficulties were.
