SED 398 Direct Instruction Lesson Plan: Ratios

Jennifer Hand PharmD April 2021

Teachers: Jennifer Hand Subject: 6th Grade Mathematics: Ratio and

Proportion
Common Core State Standards: 6.RP.A: Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve
problems…..
6.RP.A.1: Understand the concept of a ratio as comparing two quantities multiplicatively or joining/composing
the two quantities in a way that preserves a multiplicative relationship. Use ratio language to describe a ratio
relationship between two quantities.
Objective (Explicit): Students will understand the concepts of ratio.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): worksheets or online quiz problems

How will you present the objective in an engaging and student-friendly way? I will present ratio problems in class using pop culture examples:
Harry Potter/Hogworts - # of students sorted into each house, the number of eyes to the number of legs of magical creatures, etc
.
How will you communicate its importance and make the content relevant to your students? I will mention every day examples of ratios, eg. ingredients
in recipes, etc.
Technology Tools:

How will you explain and model behavioral expectations?
I will set up peardeck questions, and math games that allow
students to participate anonymously.
I will manage the chat, and tactfully address “chat spam” & redirect
students to respond appropriately.

tokens like poker chips, etc for tactile learners to sort, count & solve basic
ratio problems.
