Direct Instruction Lesson Plan: Area of rectangles, triangles

Teachers: Jennifer Hand Subject: Middle school Mathematics: 6th grade

geometry

AZ STATE STANDARD 6.G.A.1: Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals &
polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles & other shapes; apply these
techniques to solve mathematical problems in real world context.

Learning Objective: Find the area of a rectangular shape with a triangular or rectangular section cut out.

Evidence of Mastery: the student will be able to find the areas of the original rectangle and the shape that
has been cut out, and use these to obtain the area of the remaining portion of the original rectangle.

Vocabulary: Rectangle: a 4-sided flat figure with all Materials Needed: textbook or slide presentation,
interior corner angles measuring 90 degrees zoom; set of problems
Triangle: a 3-sided flat figure with the sum of all
interior angles totalling 180 dergees.
Opening activity: Review: How to find the area of a rectangle: A = LxW Area = length x width
How to find the area of a triangle: A = 1/2(bxh) Area = 1/2 times (base times height)

Instructional Input “I do”

Teacher Will: Student Will:
Demonstrate on whiteboard how to solve 2 problems: Actively capture and process the new material and
