1) Anticipatory Set:

When you hear the term Polynomial, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
2) Purpose:
Students will demonstrate that they understand how to multiply and solve a polynomial by
answering the equation on the lesson worksheet correctly.
3) Input:
In order for students to successfully master the lesson students will need to understand certain
vocabulary terms. Students will get a better understanding of the chosen vocabulary words by
reading the Algebra- Basic Definitions text. The text will provide students with an introduction
on Algebra and a review of the vocab if they have already been introduced to them.
Text: https://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/definitions.html
Chosen Vocabulary Terms:
- Polynomials
- Operator
- Constants
- Variable
- Exponents
- Term
- Fractions
- Expression
The vocabulary words were selected because students need to understand the terminology that is
used in math. The vocabulary that they will focus on are words that will be found frequently in
this lesson. Before students can start to learn and solve polynomials, they need to understand
what certain mathematical terms mean. Once they learn these mathematical terms, they will be
able to understand the vocabulary that is used in the lesson.
4) Modeling:
Begin the lesson by first introducing the text and the vocabulary terms. Then have students read
over the text. Once students have read the text and reviewed the vocabulary terms the teacher
will walk through how to multiply and solve a polynomial equation. The students will observe
and listen to how the equation is multiplied and solved.
Polynomial equation being multiplied:
2 x( 20 x +3)

2 x( 20 x +3)
2 x( 20 x )+ 2 x (3)
4 0 x2 +6 x
Polynomial equation being solved:
3 x 2+5 x +2
(3 x+ 2)(x +1)
1st Solution:
3 x+ 2=0
3 x=−2
−2
x=
3
2nd Solution:
x +1=0
x=−1

5) Guided Practice:
Students will guide the teacher on how to multiply and solve a given equation. The teacher will
show students how to start solving the equation by doing the first step. After the first steps
students will guide the teacher on the next couple of steps involved in solving the equation.
Before the last step is reached, where they isolate the variable, the teacher will work on the last
step as the students do this last step as well and observe them.
6) Check understanding:
To check students understanding the teacher will ask if students have any clarifying questions or
are confused about the final answer. If the students were able to solve the last step during the
guided practice, then it will demonstrate that the student understand the lesson. However, if some
students were not able to complete the last step the teacher will go over the step for the same
equation again and then work on different example with the class.
7) Independent practice:
Students will work independently on the lesson worksheet. The lesson worksheet will give
students the opportunity to practice multiplying and solving polynomials on their own. It will
also help them monitor their learning and see what they understand and what they may need
more practice on. As the students work on the lesson worksheet observe the students and provide
them with support when needed.
8) Closure:
The lesson will conclude with an exit slip. Give students 10-15 minutes to complete the exit slip.
Tell students to leave the exit slip on their desk when they are done or to turn them in before they
exit the class. The exit slip will give students the opportunity to reflect on their learning. The exit
slip requires students to think critically about what they understand and what they may still have
some questions about. The exit slip also serves as an assessment and gives me an idea of what I
may need to review in the next lesson to better support the students’ understanding.
