Salingtuod Dances

Tinikling
This is a popular dance that had its root during the Spanish-colonial era in the Philippines. It
originated from the islands of Leyte. It was said that the farmers, who works on large plantations
owned by the king, that are not productive are punished by standing between two large bamboo
poles. Another account of its origin is also how the farmers set up bamboo traps for the local birds
“tikling” which the birds would just dodge. And thus, they mimic the graceful maneuver of the
“tikling” birds in the dance with a lively rhythm.
Lapay Bantigue
This is mimetic dance that follows the same movements as the seagulls or “lapay” which are very
common in Bantique, Masbate- a coastal province. As it is mimics the seagulls, the dancers bend
their backs until their head is on the floor. This traditional folk dance was choreographed by Lola
Felisa several years ago as she imitated the movement of the sea gulls.
Cariñosa de Guadalope
This dance originated from the Colonial period during the Spanish Era originating from the Maria
Clara Suite of the Philippine Folk Dances. It is characterized with a fan or a handkerchief serving
the role of implying a romantic scenario. This dance came from the Panay Islands which was
introduced by the Spaniards.
Miligoy de Cebu
It is a dance that came from the northern part of Cebu City, Philippines. This dance is usually
performed in events such as baptisms, weddings, and other special programs as well. This is
characterized by bamboo castanets that the dancers use.
