Enterprise Architecture Assessed Exercise 1: DCU Incorporation Project

The DCU Incorporation Programme is the planned coming together of St Patrick’s College,
Drumcondra, Mater Dei Institute of Education and Church of Ireland College of Education with
Dublin City University – the New DCU. The President of DCU has articulated a Business Vision that a
student or staff member of any campus should be able to access facilities of all campuses in a
transparent manner.

This is quite a complicated and ambitious integration project, involving as it does the sharing of data
related to staff, students, modules and resources such as lecture theatres, laboratories, car parks
etc. It has been decided, in view of the complexity of the project, to develop an enterprise
architecture (EA) to take into consideration all aspects of the problem.

The table below is a tool to develop an Architectural Vision for the Incorporation.

1. Taking the in-class exercise covered earlier (i.e. data/ sharing of Information etc) as a blueprint,
complete the table below, documenting, for one issue per stakeholder, why it is an issue (from a
business value point of view), the data involved, what could be done to fix it and any new forms
of ICT that could be involved. [5 Marks]
2. Taking a sub-project of the Incorporation (of your choice) involving three stakeholders,
outline an environment, two objectives involved and draw an information flow diagram
for the ‘as-is’ and ‘to-be’. [5 Marks]
