SCOLIOSIS

BY ELLIE GRANT
INTRODUCTION

 Scoliosis is abnormal curvature of the

spine that usually occurs during growth
before puberty.
CAUSES

 The cause of scoliosis

is mostly unknown,
however cerebral
palsy and muscular
dystrophy have been
known to cause this
condition.
TREATMENT

 Bracing is a common treatment

recommended by orthopedic
specialists. This does not correct the
curvature, but usually helps
prevent the condition from getting
worse.
TREATMENT

 This treatment can be difficult to endure,

patients may be required to wear the
uncomfortable brace from 16 to 20 hours
each day.
TREATMENT
 Surgery on the
spine is for more
severe cases of
scoliosis, usually
when the degree
of curvature is
above 50 degrees.
FUTURE OUTLOOK

 After the spine stops growing, the

condition usually does not get any worse,
but back pain is common for people with
scoliosis in the remainder of their life.
